New Western Digital 2TB hard drive

Wow, nice price for a TB. :cool:

The real reason people would want to covert to 2TB drives will be space........ not HDD space but actual drive space.

I've got a server running at home which only has space for four drives. If my I were to install four TB drives and fill them the only way to get more space is to buy bigger drives.

But the introduction of 2TB drives will bring down the price of the TB drives even more. And lower prices are allways good news. :D
 
Exactly, space for more HDD's is the issue, I can only accomodate 6 hdd's and managed to take it up to 8( mini pci-e expansion module) in my home server.

I intended to get my 1tb's, then 1.5tbs (but with the problems that seagate had - I cancelled order for 6 an only took 1) now I am intent on getting the 2tb's.

I am really hoping to settle on getting 6 and then as the prices come down I should get the other units.

Yeah price premium is really the big problem. - I mean newegg has them at R1853 based on the current exchange rate.

Well, I guess the reason for me would be space. I have seven 1TB drives in a media server with place for 1 more. I can cram in another another two along with an expansion SATA card which should give me another year of growth/space. Then I can start replacing my 1TB's with 2's, effectively doubling the capacity while using the same physical space. But that is me, I guess for a lot of people it would be fine to get two 1TB's instead of a single 2TB.

Ditto. I'm also in the process of replacing all my 250GB and 500GB HDD's with 1TB HDD's, purely because of their current pricing - 2TB's are a bit too much at the moment.
I'm running the 6 onboard motherboard SATA ports, 2 onboard IDE ports and 2 add-on cards of 4 and 2 SATA ports - more than enough connections, just need to increase the available HDD space.
HD is a space-killer! :D

well let's say you need 10 tb space, you only need 5 hdd's as opposed to the 10 hdd's which would consume double the space.

For an average user though that is a great point.
 
jip, if physical space is not a problem multiple 1Tb drives are still cheapest.
this is the price I got last week :

at least the prices of 1Tb's are coming down, now that 2Tbs are out, the prices should start coming down even more...
