No, there's absolutely no need to apologise to them. At the end of the day they broke the law and you're letting them off easy.

It doesn't matter if an imaged is visibly watermarked, copyright is automatic.

If they didn't take the photo themselves, or ask permission to use it, then they shouldn't have published it even if they don't know who took it.

They obviously think it's less work to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Hmm...well hopefully it teaches them a lesson. I couldn't be bothered to take it further but one wonders how often they do this.

You should have got some money out of them - even if you then turned around and gave it to some charity.

Because it is yours its copyright infringement and you could have suffered damages as a result (Had you been a professional photographer), so they would be very quick to act to avoid a lawsuit.
 
Never thought I'd say this but kudos to news 24 for doing the right thing and to you for being reasonable.
