I'd appreciate any info anyone can give here.

First, I just started using the MWEB news server. My reader supports SSL but I'm not sure if MWEB would be ok with it. Just seems like something that would circumvent their protocols.

Would it be ok and if so what is their SSL port?

And further to this. Would they have a problem with me using a program like Stunnel?

they don.t support ssl, on there news server.

you get full speed on there server on cached content

Why would you want to use SSL in for news server downloads in the first place?

I only see a reason for it if you want to bypass Layer 7 packet inspection when downloading from an odd/unknown server.
