I don't have an iPhone - yet - but I've got the Nexus 7 and iPad mini in front of me right now and you cannot even compare the two in terms of build quality. Even if my nexus wasn't suffering from screen separation it just feels cheap, and bulky.

If memory serves the 8gb Nexus sold for $199 - the 16gb Mini for $329 so $130 but since the Nexus is essentially falling apart I'd have to say it's worth the extra.
I'm happy to pay more for quality. If the mini suffered the same design defects as the Nexus I'd be even more pissed - $130 more pissed to be exact.

It really is disappointing to hear that about the Nexus... But I suppose at cost price, most are happy with it.

I have a Razr Maxx which I love, and it is very well put together - even has a kevlar back. But the iPad feels like a premium product.

How exactly could one argue that? The cost of the thing is really not that bad. You can get it on CellC now for r400 with 200/200/500mb.
S3 by comparison is R329 on 100/100/100mb. It seems very competitively priced to me.
Well I never had any issue with the Nexus build quality when I had it, it felt quite well made to me. But it still didn't feel even remotely as good as the iPad3 when I got that. I haven't yet held any phone/tablet that feels as premium made as the Apple equivalent.
Just speaking for myself, I would pay in the extra money very willingly to get better build quality. And that goes for literally any device - computer, printer, car, tv.....I would even pay more to get a lawnmower that is solidly built.

All of my iPhones, going back to the very first 2G model are still working like new, and still use their original battery. Although they have now been relegated to being used for entertainment, connected to my home theatre system......at least they are still serving a purpose.

To be honest, I will never understand why the Android tablet vendors in particular, do not make more of an effort to raise their quality control standards. They already feel that they can charge us similar prices to the iPad, so at least build the damn thing to the same standard.
If there was an Android tablet that was built to even 90% of the iPad's quality, I would own it. Unfortunately, none exist...

Fully agree with you. I think this is why the iPhone 5 build quality issue was such a massive one to all- it was unexpected from them.

I notice IC has the iPhone 5 for R532/month on 24 month contract. Are they on crack or what? Pay another r130 over CellC's price and get no minutes, sign me up!

I've just bought the Nexus 7 3G (cost is R4000 and maybe R3700 if lucky) and the price difference to the iPad Mini (cost is R5900 for the 32GB 3G model) is R2000. I had a look at the Mini and I can honestly say that there is not a R2000 difference. The Mini has a bigger screen which is nice and the rear camera. The Nexus 7 screen seems to be nicer especially with small text and the Android has a totally different look and feel compared to iOS.
I wouldn't say the Nexus 7 build quality is 'bad', I think it's pretty good. I would say though that the perceived build quality of the Mini seems to be higher for whatever reason but they are not worlds apart.
At the end of the day, the newer Android OS won me over compared to the aging iOS and the icing on the cake is that it was R2000 cheaper...
Just to let you know, the purpose of the tablet for me is for emails and meetings at work and maybe some simple games(dare I say Angry Birds)....no movies, serious gaming, music etc...
Sold my Nexus7, nice to consume media. Screen not big enough to do anything useful on.
Went to iStore to buy a iPad mini, but screen resolution was really disappointing coming from Nexus. Walked out with 64GB iPad 4. Awesome device.
That I don't get but then I've ignored the tech specs and relied on my eyes. The mini might not have as many pixels as my third gen iPad but since it's got the same number of pixels as my iPad2 crammed into a much smaller space it gets the job done nicely.
Now I just have to wait for my missus to finish reading her 50 shades BS and give it back to me!
Coming from iPad2 it might not bother you, but compared to the Nexus7 it just didn't feel right. I especially compared crisp text for reading. Will definitely buy the iPad min 2 with retina. It is an awesome size/device.
I prefer reading on the mini and not just because of the unnatural* aspect ratio on the nexus 7.
I don't see how they're going to bring out a retina anytime soon unless they abandon their current methodology. The iPad retina has exactly double the pixels as the iPad one and two. Cramming that number of pixels into the smaller screen is going to be interesting to say the least.
* excluding word of the day toilet paper.
Hmmmmm....I absolutely hate Android's bells and whistles. Only thing about iOS I hate is the lack of file system access of some sort.
Half the extras in Android you never use. Btw I'm an embedded software architect before you call me a sheep or whatever.
What bells, whistles and extras are you referring to?

You don't use multitasking? That is probably one of the two reasons I use android more. Downloading stuff in the background is really big for most so that isn't bells and whistles. The others most (not me though) won't care about much, so I will agree with you on that.
