Nice article on Android vs iOS / Open vs Closed

Now the iPhone is an outstanding product. It may even be better than any single Android phone. However, I would still never buy one, because of the ecosystem.

The "Apple ecosystem" is actually what makes the whole experience of owning an iPhone so good....

I have the whole ecosystem - iMac, MacMini, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone. A few weeks ago I bought a new Samsung S3 to see what the fuss was all about. Yes, there is a lot to love about the S3...nice big screen, a few neat features that Android uses, changeable battery etc. But it is DAMN frustrating with the S3 not being in my "ecosystem".

With the Apple ecosystem, everything is done so seamlessly - I get emails confirming air flights....I just click on the date in the email, and it adds my flight details to my calendar....which then wirelessly updates all my other devices. So all I do is arrive at the airport with my iPhone and all the flight details are already on there. I buy a song off iTunes store, and it automatically gets onto all my other devices. These are just examples

To realise the benefits of being in the Apple ecosystem, you really need to be in it first to realise how well the system works.

I love my new Samsung S3, but because of the above explanation, I don't see myself using it as my main phone. I am still using my old iPhone 4 as my main phone

Yeah this whole thing of being 'locked in', and people can go on about it... like... who locked you in? You did. Or if you aren't locked in it just means you have to be always shopping around to avoid lock in. If you go via Amazon you're locked into them, if you go via iTunes you're locked into them. But it's not some indentured servitude, you just change devices, make the transition and carry on with your little life.

I only had to install the drivers for my S3 and I could use it like a flash drive.

Yes, milk the Ifans some more.

Agreed. The iPod is years ahead of anything else out there.

There you lost it. If the iPhone was so much better than the S3 wouldn't it have been two of the world's best technology magazines smartphone of the year?

Maybe do some research before talking crap.

etc. etc. etc.

Buddy, we're talking cash prices, not over subsidized contract prices in ZA. Go and find the bill of materials for the iPhone 5 vs the Samsung S3 LTE (and make sure its the LTE, so we compare apples with apples... so to speak) haven't got time to go find it now but its out there. I'll add a link later.

Apple barely make a profit on the 16GB on contract, in fact they lose about $10

I didn't even bother looking for the S3's BoM. Just the iPhone BoM shows that you have no idea what you are on about.

Iphone - http://www.isuppli.com/Teardowns/News/pages/iPhone5-Carries-$199-BOM-Virtual-Teardown-Reveals.aspx

16Gb - BoM - $199 - Sales price - $649
32Gb - BoM - $209 - Sales price - $749
64Gb - BoM - $230 - Sales price - $849

Sorry for the tirade. You sounded a bit android-ish. I'm just tired of people stereotyping apple supporters and ripping into Apple unfairly.

Something I do utterly despise about Apple is its international trade relations with its international clients. Seriously they could not care two hoots about anyone not in the US. Even Canadians get shafted. They could at least sell us some vouchers.

So, fair play. I'm not all "fan boy"

Wait, cerebus being cited as "android-ish"? :wtf:

Well I would probably be able to live with a full apple solution today, since I got uncapped.

My problem was that I went over my 20gig limit in 4 days and then be stuck on local and couldn't update my larger stuff over 3G and watch the larger podcast etc. But I also think the limit is already higher.

By the way, except for the iTunes shared across devices part in your post, I also do all of that on my S3, plus Google Now pops up and asks me if I want directions to the airport.

Anyway I think I already committed to android with the amount of apps I purchased, but I think both platforms are pretty much moving in the correct direction.

I also like the fact that I. Can stream directly from my phone to my tv out of the box, but that is a Samsung feature not android.

You might be right. I might not know what I'm talking about.

I read an article that seemed to claim there were models of the S3 that did not include LTE, that appears to be *BS* according to GSMarena. So whatever I was saying on that specific point, I retract and concede, i'm a poepol. Or at least I think so. I dunno much about S3 and I don't really care to know. I've played with a few and they all feel cheap.

Second point on the profitability issue. I can't find the article that proved that the Samsung S3 was more profitable than the iPhone 5. This article showed that the S3 cost less to manufacture than both HTC One X and iPhone 5 16GB. The iPhone 5 16GB and S3 were both launched at a price $199 *on contract*.

The point I was making in my post is that Apple is not greedy so as to provide an overpriced piece of crap to the market. They provide quality goods. That's my opinion and until I'm proven wrong I'll stick to it.

However, I will concede publicly that I'm talking absolute BALLS of BS is anyone can find the BOM for Samsung S3 cos I looked quickly and I can't find one. I can only recall what I saw on drippler and found it very telling. Maybe that article was BS.

Either way, I'm happy to admit if I'm wrong factually. On the basis of perception, the S3 does not impress me at all. It has made in China written all over it!

(That was a bit of tongue in cheek humour by the way, no need to get nasty, I know where the iPhone was manufactured.)

Aaah. 3 articles all about the same issue, and all on the same phone it appears... (except the neowin article... that phone looks rather enticing actually)

Apple have sold 463 phones per minute (in China), and 5 million phones over its launch weekend and the best they can come up with for Applegate 5.... is a few a scuff marks on ONE phone.

Nope. Sorry, proves nothing.

Try reading the links in the articles that take you to the Apple support forums. This was a global problem, ignorance of it won't change it.

Here you go anyway:

You do get an LTE version and a non lte version. I have non lte.

And on the made in china comment. I think it makes sense. As to me build quality indicates how well it was built. I prefer the all aluminium look of the iPhone how ever. The glass thing also looked nice, but to me the glass thing didn't scream build quality. It kinda screamed stupid, but it looked nice.

Build quality indicates if it will take a punch or two. The new iphone looks like it will. Plastic does too usually.

The build quality issues were related to the manufacturing side at Foxconn. That's why they slowed it down, to get the build up to scratch. Foxconn went on record saying it was the most demanding piece of engineering they'd ever had to do. The design of the build of the iPhone5 is exceptionally strong, one of the most durable phones on the market, except that the chamfered edges are going to probably weather over time if they're unprotected.

Lol those teardowns are always fun and not at all misleading. Interesting that Surface's profit per unit is higher than iPad's...now if only they could sell a few.

The ones that are really shocking are the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire BoM teardowns. Those things are literally sold at cost, or even below cost if you take sundries into account. But Samsung is certainly not one to make a loss on hardware.

The quality of the design is extraneous to the build quality. And the build quality is not that great, from the mouths of the consumers. To paraphrase the other poster: Apple are greedy so as to provide an overpriced piece of crap to the market. Such is business.

What does that sentence even mean? Build quality is what the manufacturer does on the production floor; like the Nexus 7's screen popping out issues for instance. Quality of design is what the product owner does before it goes into production. The problems reported are manufacturing ones and they are the reason Apple slowed down production and suffered shortages as a result. Now they got it back up to speed finally but I'm not sure what the users are reporting.

And the build quality is not that great, from the mouths of the consumers.
Exactly what I said above.

To paraphrase the other poster: Apple are greedy so as to provide an overpriced piece of crap to the market. Such is business.
....right then.

And the build quality is not that great, from the mouths of the consumers.
Well as one of those consumers with an iPhone 5 in front of me, I can say its the highest quality phone I've ever handled. To me the look and feel (of the black one) is akin to a precision swiss made 'jewelery' type device.

You are saying the same thing that I am :)

I responded to the original poster on the basis of this quote:

Not my words, but if the shoe fits... Jokes aside, in terms of cost vs BoM, one could argue that it is an overpriced piece of crap...

Highest quality or best looking? I appreciate the lovely design of the device...
