Nikon D700

Haha, I love the way the news item starts: "Perhaps the worst kept secret"

You'd think after a few days with it they'd have some sample images to show. What did they do, just sat around fiddling with it?

I read about this the other day and I was like WOW. Don't even wanna know what the price is gonna be over here :o

One would hope that Canon is watching Nikon closely, and that the new 5D would match this, at the very least.

Would be amusing to see the fans scream if they don't raise the MP on the new model :D

I just want the successor for the 5D to be announced so I can hopefully get the 5D at a better price :)

Hehe, I'll wait and see what the new one costs after a few months on the market. BTW, the 40D is now only a few bucks more than the 450D. Saw it for £520 retail over the weekend

Skimming over the D700 specs, I notice it can go up to 8fps. If you feel like some Gerry Springer/Ricky Lake style fighting with a photography spin, go read the 1D / 1Ds / 5D Forum on dpreview. Guys are bitter...

ldmelsa, I was expecting comment from you by now?

it will be a great camera
it's a d300 with awesome lowlight and the ability to use all Nikon lenses
plus it's $2000 less than the D3 (same chip)
if i was a wedding photographer i would get this

If Canon doesnt at least match the D700 by the time I'm ready to upgrade I could find myself switching provided there's a market left for my old gear.

f/4 and you wouldn't want it anyway - you need IS iirc. :)

Hehe, true. I wouldn't want it anyway, I have little use for such a lens - for the one out of several hundred shots over 105mm that I take, my lowly Sigma 70-300 is perfectly fine. I'm having way more fun with my 10-20mm anway :D

I thought the current 5D at a reduced price were what you're aiming at? The D700 isn't cheap.

Can someone explain to me what all the f2.8 stuff is and also the ISO stuff please :p
Wiki to the rescue -

Aperture (eg f/2.8) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture
ISO - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_speed#Digital_camera_ISO_speed_and_exposure_index

and the third all important setting . . .
shutter speed - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_speed

IS or not its a beautiful lens and awesome for portraits - something I find myself doing a lot of these days.

Damn, it's going to take me longer to dig up the relevant historic threads on this than to just type it out. But I know bwana is already working on it. :p

bwana, why don't you get a 5D?
then you can use your 70-200
the 5D still has better technical image quality (except, lowlight)

reasons to get a D700:
ergonomics
functionality
faster camera
better LCD
better lowlight (5D, not bad at lowlight ;))

reasons to get a 5D:
sharper picture
cheaper ($1900 vs $3000)
use your existing Canon lenses

5D + that lens of yours = ****ing sharp
