Nikon vs Canon: Which do you prefer?

Back on topic. OP, apples to apples, price wise in SA, is more the D5500 vs the 70D. Even then the Canon is cheaper.

I had a 450D, and decided to upgrade. Reviews made me consider switching to the Nikon D610 (mainly for the almost 2 stops dynamic range you mentioned). Until I saw that in SA, the D610 was priced closer to the 5Dmk3 than the 6D it was meant to compete with.
Then you aren't even taking the cost of lenses into account.

No, but the quoted poster was making out that EVF was wonderful new tech. It's not. You don't need EVF with an SLR.

FWIW, I'm with Bwana here. You buy the system you can afford at the time, then once you buy your first expensive lens, you're stuck with the brand. You then buy bodies to fit the lenses.

The big deal with the new mirrorless systems is that they are finally good enough to be used on more expensive cameras that use expensive lenses.
That said, I only needed all of a minute with one to know that they aren't good enough for me yet. Sure, the pixel densities increased, but it's still not there yet. The delay is also annoying.
 
I haven't been using a DSLR for long, but I've been dabbling with photography using point and shoots, Bridge Camera's, smart phone cameras and apps and now I a "proper" camera - a Canon 750D. I prefer Canon due to the following reasons :
  • I like the feel of it in my hands
  • The availability and price of lenses and accessories
  • The price of the body compared to similar spec Nikon cameras
  • The mobile app and its features
  • Silent auto focus when filming video

Comfort was probably the biggest factor for me - canon fit my hand better, YMMV

Silent autofocusing is a feature of the lens, something to keep in mind though is that most of the people shooting video regularly rack focus manually.

True, my bad... I guess it slipped my mind - I just recalled several video reviews highlighting the clicking noise that the Nikons made with auto focus while shooting video, compared to the silent Canons... I suppose it was a comparison of the bundled kit lenses as well as the cameras.
 
So I just took this photo now on my Nikon DSLR, and for me it's a good example of the 'Nikon look'.

All the Canon-shooters on here, correct me if I'm wrong, but it is impossible to get this specific soft shade of yellow out of a Canon. I say this as a former Canon shooter myself, it's the whole reason I went Nikon this time around.

However go ahead, prove me wrong: do you have something comparable you've shot on a Canon and can share here?

Oh pffffffft :P I have hoods too and used it here as well, but I'm willing to bet you that if you took a photo without a hood it still wouldn't look like that. Go on, there's a photo challenge for you.

It's flaring, plane and simple - and I'm not just talking about the 6 spot flares. Nothing specific to Nikon there I'm afraid. Good news is a couple quick adjustments in PS will [mostly] fix it right up. :)

If I'd shot something like that it would have gone straight into the delete bin. Why would I want a bad contre-jour photo with a yellow/green colour cast speckled with flare and with limited definition and contrast? :confused:

Oh god, so there you have it ... hardcore Canon photographers may be as limited as their cameras :P Yes it's flaring but that's the point: a Nikon doesn't flare the same as a Canon. Nikons and Canons have different 'styles' right out of the camera, which is sorta the point of this thread: rather than just considering ergonomics and price, you really have to think about which style of photography you prefer. Yes you can strip every photo down in RAW and muck around in Photoshop, but realistically most DSLR photographers aren't gonna be doing that. In other words, you've gotta think about the style of the image processing.

Because it captures a feeling. You have those?
 
Not going into debate of look since most can be emulated.
Reason why I selected canon was due to wider range of lenses and some exotic glass that Nikon does not have.
Additionally Canon equipment is cheaper and second hand market is bigger.

However if you do not gel with canon body and do with nikon then go nikon route.

I'm also Fuji fan :-)

Canon is better since I can shoot at f/1.2 and I can control focus points with movement of my eye.

Printed on Agfa multi contrast paper (8x10), contrast filter 5, exposed for 12 seconds.
Scanned on iffy HP scanner.

This was taken in 2008 while visiting gallery, my friend was looking at the photo.
50mm f/1.2 with special canon look.

This was before she became famous, she also shoots canon!

Lol, in so far as that's a b&w photo and I don't think anybody has ever argued that Nikon and Canon handle b&w differently, no ... not too helpful :P Have another drink as punishment.

If you are only starting join photographic club, it helped me greatly.
