New Nissan Gravite teased as Triber twin

The new Nissan Gravite has been teased in India – and, yes, it’ll be based on Renault’s Triber. Here’s what we know about this 7-seater MPV, due to launch in SA in 2026…

It’s official: “Nissan Gravite” is the name that will be worn by the brand’s upcoming MPV. As you might have already guessed, this freshly teased 7-seater – which will be built in India – will be based squarely on the Renault Triber. And it’s likely coming to South Africa next year.

Tipped to launch locally at some point in 2026, the new 3-row Gravite will be joined by the (likewise not-yet-revealed) Duster-based Tekton, with both set to slot into Nissan SA’s line-up above the strong-selling Magnite. In addition, a new 7-seater model described by Nissan as a “C-SUV” (and surely based on Renault’s upcoming Bigster) is due to launch in 2027.

Under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the new Gravite – which will be produced in Oragadam near Chennai alongside the Magnite, Triber and Kiger – will be a badge-engineered version of the Triber and thus share its CMF-A platform. Like its donor car, it will measure under 4 000 mm long.

Based on these latest teaser images, the new Gravite will feature the same sculpted bonnet as the facelifted Triber, though with “Gravite” lettering along the leading edge. In addition, the Nissan version will seemingly feature a unique front lighting signature as well as distinct front- and rear-bumper designs.

According to Nissan’s Indian division, the new Gravite will be fully revealed at some point in January 2026, before hitting showrooms across the world’s most populous nation by March 2026.

For the record, Nissan Motor Corporation filed to trademark the “Gravite” nameplate in South Africa in May 2024, though it has yet to be officially registered. The Japanese automaker applied to reserve the very same nameplate in India back in November 2023.

Now all Nissan needs to do is throw in a 1.2 litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine & a CVT transmission from the Qashqai to make it even more competitive then the Renault Triber & it's anemic 1.0 litre 3-cylinder petrol engine & AMT gearbox... especially up on the Highveld... ;)

Nissan has released teaser images of its upcoming Gravite compact people-mover. The Renault Triber-based Gravite is set to make its official debut in India early in 2026, and will be manufactured at Renault’s Chennai plant in India, where the Triber is also produced. The Nissan Tekton, which is based on the Renault Duster, will follow as the second Indian-built product in the firm’s lineup and is expected to be launched in mid-2026.

Meet the new Nissan Gravite. As you’ve no doubt already worked out, this new 7-seater MPV – which has just been revealed in India – is the badge-engineered twin of the Renault Triber.

Conceived under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the new Gravite – set to be produced in Oragadam near Chennai alongside the Magnite, Triber and Kiger – borrows the CMF-A platform from its Renault cousin.

So, will this Triber twin come to South Africa? Well, when the initial teaser images were released late in 2025, Nissan SA told us it had no plans “at this point” to launch the newcomer locally. For the record, Nissan filed to trademark the “Gravite” nameplate in South Africa in May 2024, so it’s seemingly not completely off the table.

As you’d expect, the Gravite shares its general silhouette with the Triber, though various cosmetic elements – from the front lighting signature, bumpers, grille and wheel designs – are specific to Nissan’s version. In addition, it gains “Gravite” lettering along the leading edge of its bonnet as well as on its tailgate.

Nissan Gravite revealed: Renault Triber-based compact MPV for SA?

Based on the Renault Triber, the Nissan Gravite has made its debut … and it appears likely that it could make its way to SA.

In December 2025, Nissan released teaser images of its Gravite compact MPV. Now, the Japanese automaker’s Indian arm has finally whipped the wraps off its Renault Triber-based model offering.

Produced at Renault-Nissan Alliance’s Chennai plant in India, the Gravite is distinguished from its Renault step-sibling via subtle exterior design elements, with the most notable coming in the shape of a new front grille. ‘Gravite’ badging can be found on the bonnet and tailgate.

In India, the Gravite is available with the choice of seven trim grades, ranging from manual-only Visia to range-topping Tekna Launch Edition EZ-Shift. Based on local model denominations, if the Gravite were to make its way to our market, it will likely be offered in Visia, Acenta and Acenta Plus levels of specification.

The Gravite is powered by a 52 kW/96 N.m 1.0-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine – the same unit employed by the local Triber lineup. The three-pot is available with the choice of two transmission options: a five-speed manual and automated manual transmission (AMT) with the same number of cogs.

Inside, the Gravite’s cabin is familiar to the Triber’s; featuring modular seats offering multiple layouts for increased space and practicality. Across the board, the Indian range features six airbags, several safety aids and rear parking sensors, while higher-spec models gain updated infotainment and air conditioning for each row, among other items.
