I am posting this to the internet so people who have the same problem will know where to look.

My Nissan Tiida suddenly started to idle rough. On higher revs it was fairly normal, but very rough on low revs, with the car shaking. All forums I read said it could either be plugs or fuel injection. I replaced the plugs because it anyway needed replacement, but the problem did not go away. A mechanic suggested it is the coil packs. R2000 for a new set. That did not make sense to me.

So I got hold of a guy with lots of experience on cars (one of those who overhauled his first engine at 5 years of age) and he immediately said it sounds like the airflow sensor. I took the car to him and he took out the sensor (sitting right next to the airfilter with an electrical plug on it and 2 screws holding it down). Looking inside it I saw some foreign object like a small piece of grass or pollen inside. We sprayed some alcohol based cleaner it but that did not remove the thing. I then tried to shake it out and next thing it was out. We put the sensor back and when we started the engine she was as sweet as the day I bought her. No sign of any problem.

So just a heads up, people. Dont just believe what the local mechanic says. It will cost you a lot. Find someone with good experience. But if you have a similar problem, just have a look at that airflow sensor.

on most modern cars fitted with MAF sensors you can clean them regularly. Midas even sells the cleaning spray for maf sensors.
