Hi guys,

I'm in the process of purchasing property. I currently drive a BMW 1 series, which is still on motorplan for the next 2 years. I was thinking about maybe trading it in on a 2nd hand Xtrail. Has anyone owned one of these vehicles before? Can you comment on the reliability? Also any idea on the cost of Nissan parts vs BMW parts.

Thanks!!

I love the xtrail. I smaak a new car but don't want to pay for one. hence no car yet.

I'm posting now so that I remember to come back here later and [-]make fun[/-] give "advice".

OP, what year and model Xtrail are you currently looking at?

Dad has owned 3 Xtrails now since 2006 or so. Has clocked over 250 000 km on his first two and his third is currently sitting at 60 000 km. No breakdowns, no mechanical failures, and no electronic failures. His 2nd one did have an issue where the car would shudder under braking. The dealer he bought it from kept saying nothing was wrong with the vehicle and he kept insisting that the rotors were defective. They always claimed to have replaced them after he sent the car in, on the third time he returned the vehicle he asked them for the original rotors. They couldn't produce them, so he told them to go **** themselves and took it to the dealer where he bought his third. They got it right first time, replaced the rotors and no more issues.

Not particularly exciting cars though. I personally wouldn't buy one as I find it very sluggish when trying to accelerate, even in the 2.5 litre variant. The interior is also bland and uninspiring.

What are your requirements regarding the new property - do you need something to haul building materials and the like? If you do not have a strong need for this then it is probably best to avoid the financial stress of buying a vehicle and property at the same time. The BMW still has a two year motor plan which will give you some financial security while you let matters concerning the property settle down.

I have the 2.5 petrol, 2008 model.
Like XennoX says it's not the most exciting car out there, but it has a lot of space inside (having twins this was the deciding factor for us).
I only had to replace the front shocks because of a pothole incident. The car had its 90k km service this week(major service) and was about R3400.

I like the X-Trail. Bought an '09 2.0d for resale and drove a few thousand km with it and it had no issues. It's now for sale, PM me if you want details

Apologies I wasn't clear in my original post. Luckily I am not doing any building. My thinking is that I am going to be paying more monthly towards a house than I am used to paying. And it does make savings a bit more tight. I am concerned with the long term ownership of the BMW, it's fully paid off but I'm worried about the maintenance costs in 2 years. I was thinking about getting something a bit more ordinary and then the Xtrail caught my eye. I don't drive very much and I see there is an option of extending the BMWs motorplan, but I've got no idea how much that will cost.

@TehStranger I am looking at a 2012 model, it would mean that I would be getting into debt with the purchase though. Around R50 000 after the trade in.

What's up with white people and jeeps/bakkies? Each and every one of them at my work has a Jeep/Toyota Fortuner or some other large 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Not just Whites! :p

Remember I am at a dealership that also sells Jeep, and 90% of the Jeep customers couldn't be classified as "white" in a month of Sundays ! ;)

What I would like to know is why have a petrol/diesel hungry vehicle when petrol/diesel price is so high instead of an economical one.
