My brother decided he wanted a PS3 yesterday and we shot off to Cresta. We popped into Incredible who only had 40GB versions so headed through the centre stopping at CNA, Game, Look&Listem, Musica etc

Eventually we were told these had been discontinued and 40GB was all the had. I phoned Animeworx (as they normally know facts ;) and was told the 60GB stopped a few months ago and the 80GB should be here in March.

How stupid that for that 6 month gap, everyone wanting a PS3 will need to get the budget one?! They should have an alternative before removing the 60GB. I realise it's only a few features, but still.

Also the 60GB is much more value! We paid a similar price for his budget console, one game and one control compared to what we'd pay for the 60GB, 2 games, 2 controls ...

Who distributes these? Ster Kinekor?

i think the 80gb is gonna sell for same price as 60gb....
and 40gb is the budget model...

i've also been looking into buying 4rd gen console... waiting for march as all prices are said to change

Um... there's a reason why the PAL area's must wait... and thats for a very good reason... They gonna release the 80gb ps3 with dual shock 3 controllers :D thats right... so if you can wait 3 months, then do, because the dual shock 3 controls are very good so they say :D

lol remember, every thing is done for a reason, and sony didn't think that the 60gb would be sold out so fast, thats why there's no alternative...

later man...

The 40GB version is missing a bunch of hardware.

USB = 40GB has 2
= 80GB has 4

Flash Card readers = 40GB hasn't got them
= 80GB has card readers

PS2 games = 40GB can't play any PS2
= 80GB can play most PS2 games
= 60GB plays all PS2 games.

We still stock 60GB PS3's.

Yea but it's sad that anyone wanting to buy a PS3 for a 6 month period is forced to get the budget model ...

Importing one is always another option. 60gb version can still probably be found on eBay for about 5k incl Express shipping. I'm not sure though how much the custom fees would come to.

= 80GB can play most PS2 games
= 60GB plays all PS2 games.
These statements would apply to the NTSC version. It seems highly unlikely that a PAL 60Gb version would be more backward compatible than any upcoming 80Gb, unless like the 40Gb the 80Gb version is simply stripped of the ability to play PS2 games. The PAL 60Gb version didn't play all PS2 games.

Has Sony actually announced the release of a more expensive model for PAL regions? Their intention seemed to be to strip down the features to reduce the price so they could sell more consoles.

80 GB model also excludes the PlayStation 2 "Emotion Engine" CPU chip. However, it still keeps the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU. Due to emulating of the "Emotion Engine", the level of compatibility was reduced.

So from everything - the 60GB was the coolest PS3 ... ? All the features and engines? Told him to go for Xbox ;P

At this time the 80GB model is not planned to be released in Europe or South Africa.

If it does finally make it's way here it won't have backwards compatability either... In other words you are out of luck.

The only option you have is to try and find the 60GB model or take the 40GB model...

The fact that Sony has now discontinued 3 PS3 models in one year is disturbing though

WELL... the 80 gb has the same b/c as the PAL 60gb... and the PAL 80gb is planned for march, it will be released with the dual shock three meaning, it comes with the new controls which vibrates for the ladies and hard core gamers...

It's only the 40gb that don't have a b/c and other things...

But ya, it is sad that sony discontinued 3 models... but the fight is not over yet... lol...

Got a link for the planned PAL 80gb model because according to Steve Foster of Sony Europe

Steve Foster said:
The model of choice, going forward, is going to be the 40GB. So when you say the 60GB is going to be phased out, that is absolutely correct. And our manufacturing plant has already stopped production of 60GB and there is no truth to what you say about the 80GB (It coming out later) — it's a fabrication, or a misunderstanding.

Now I have to admit that Sony has a bad reputation in regard to how honest their execs are but at this time there is no planned 80GB model coming to South Africa

You want something backward compatible then buy an Xbox ;)

//The last line was a joke don't shoot me

Doobies evil conspiracy - there will be no 80Gb for Europe and the US 80Gb will be discontinued.

Sony will introduce another new SKU next year at the full $600 (maybe $500) that includes - 120Gb drive, full BC and dualshock3 controllers.

No just my own conspiracy theory based on the past actions of Sony. (There is a rumour about a new SKU though, I think they found it at the FCC or something) difference between the 40 & 60 isn't $100 worth, they need to make a bigger differentiation, they also need to sell more expensive units to cover the manufacturing costs.

EDIT: Here's my other (totally ludicrous ) conspiracy theory - This weeks Xbox Live! outages are caused by syn flood attack on the XBL servers from the army of Zombie computers created by the Sony rootkit ;)
