No appeal to VANS ruling

I & I messup

When Ivy and Icasa mess up nobody can untangle their mess ups. If everyone had the right to build their own network it would still be useless without proper competitive enabling legislation.

Mobile frequency allows for 5 operators in each band.
900mhz - 5 operators
1800mhz - 5 operators
2100mhz - 5 operators
2500mhz - 5 operators

That equals to 20 companies with spectrum !

What has ICASA done ?

FEW OPERATORS MTN, Vodacom, Cell-C, TELKOM & own the airwaves.

What band are the new operators going 2 bid for ?

If you understand the dynamics of this damage u will understand the point.

DxL - Mobile

This ruling affects a lot more than just wireless.

Whoa... wait a second...

27 operators? What about the other 530 odd with VANS licenses? What happens to them? Every single one of them as a right to the same treatment, you cant pick and choose ICASA!

I see another court case coming if they dont rectify that...

I really hope that so far only 27 have applied for the new license. If not, there will be another court case, yes.

OK, to all the large companies out there that have money..

Now is your chance.
Wireless, wireless, wireles. I'm sick of it. High latency, bad reliability.

A fibre line to my home please. (or copper..)

Even if Ivy knew what an appeal was and realised that she'd actually need to do it within a certain time frame, the truth is she couldn't appeal this particular decision.

To be frank, this ruling actually is a saving grace for 2010 - and potentially for the ANC government as well. Telkom don't seem in any real hurry to get infrastructure upgraded - in fact, it really appears that Telkom have completely stalled any infrastructure development and are seemingly looking to see what Neotel get up to before making any big expenditure decisions. And Neotel are slowly plodding along. Allowing VANS to self provide makes it plausible for a true ICT convergent company (with a VANS license to boot) to step in and save the day, so to speak.

If it were left to Telkom, Neotel or one of the cellular/mobile incumbants, it would probably be left too late. The really astounding aspect of all this is that the government has their fingers in every one of those pies (Telkom, Neotel, mobile providers...), and that seemingly results in non-action for profit, so to speak. A private company with a vested interest in some foreign investment may very well be more than happy to throw caution to the wind to try and get it done - and reap massive reward in the process.

So, while Ivy may have some leftover quiche on her face and gravy drippings on her chin, this ruling probably saved her department come 2010.

I don't think that was gravy, with her head being so far up Telkoms ...

How much will this affect pricing for the man on the street while the only pipe out of SA is still monopolised?
Is this going to be a period for vans to prepare for the coming options next year?

OK, I am glad for this... but realistically speaking, how many companies are actually going to lay another fixed line to my residence?

Not likely , but I think they will target gated communities ,large residential estates and office parks , that should make sense for them at this point in time

Out of interest does anyone know which were the 27 or so companies out of 29 who opposed the Altech application for VANS to self provide??

a varied bunch from small to big - basically these were the 27 or so VANS that participated in the competitive process for IECNS licenses. this process has now been declared to be unlawful so there is really nothing special about these companies (other than the fact that some of them saw fit to actively oppose being allowed to self-provide )

if altech gets the rights - every VANS gets the rights

If I was a VAN, I would use the opportunity to roll out national backbone networks only, or perhaps lease a fibre or wavelength from a third party fibre provider like Dark Fibre Africa. Specifically, I would run a fat pipe to Mtunzuni, where the 1.28Tbps SEACOM cable will land in June 2009. That will give me access to $250 per Mbit international connectivity. Digging up roads, building local loops and rolling out access networks is not profitable and totally impractical for 30 companies to all do simultaneously.

ah - just read the gazette - seems like ICASA only want to give it to the companies that did so participate (and not all of them either)

screw-up of monumental proportions in progress

problem is LLU hasn't even started yet.. so much for Ivy's deadline being the cut off and things must get done on the way.. until that happens, best these guys will do is make national networks and cut costs that way.
