No Man's Sky

I'm in two minds. To me a space sim is meant for the PC, but then again I have never tried one on a console before. But my PS4 was making strange noises, and ejecting the game disc, after I switched it off last night (had to pull power cord to turn it off properly) - so it may be on its way out.

Think I'll wait for a couple of reviews and see what's said. My PC isn't capable of 1440p. was thinking of getting a new GPU and monitor, but if I have to replace PS4 then might hold off.

"The game info isn't stored on a server or hard drive"

How does that work? I know it's procedurally generated. But after someone discovers a 'new' planet, that will have to be saved no?

That statement doesnt sound correct. Obviously the game data is stored on a HDD, so what do they refer to as 'info'? In order for them to have a 'center' the universe has to be the same for everybody. Originally generated with PG and then stored. Everyone has access to this 'map'. Afaik the actual planet content will also be PG so although you may be on the same planet as a friend, the actual look/layout may be a bit diff..

When generated from the same seed, you`ll get the same map again.
They`ll only need to save what is altered, and generate what is seen.

Kind of like how minecraft works. and maybe this universe. :D

The game is procedurally generated. This means that as planets etc are discovered and named, so they remain the same for everyone else. It's just that they are generated procedurally as you go.. so if someone's been there, it means it has already been procedurally generated and you will see what was generated when it was first found. So if someone finds it first, then it will be the same for everyone else. This is how I understand it.

No Man’s Sky will feature a regular OST, created and produced by Sheffield band 65daysofstatic (they were the ones who did the song for the game’s reveal trailer). The band has produced an album of sorts, which is used in semi-scripted moments throughout the game. The real magic comes into play with the band’s stored “scraps” from their experimentation, which Weir is using to procedurally generate soundtracks for each unique planet – in real-time.

That's not quite right, it's procedurally generated for everyone, everytime. The key is that because the same seed is used whatever actually gets generated at any particular point will always be the same. - Think of it as a math formula (which it is), if you start with the same number you'll always get the same result.

That's not how I understand it. Even if two different players are playing offline mode only, they should have the exact same set of planets and stuff. The world is being procedurally generated according to a set of instructions. The instructions are randomly generated, but only generated once and for everyone to use.

Or another elite dangerous.

To date the only game I've requested a refund for on Steam.

@Bryn and @redarrow are you saying that if we somehow find the same planet at different times, it will have different characteristics? This is not how I understand it. My understanding (which may well be incorrect) is that the universe is procedurally generated for each person, and if you (or I) find a planet then it's characteristics and life forms etc will be the same for us both from then on.

No. Every planet, every animal, every system etc. will be identical for all players. It is irrelevant who has explored what, aside from players using online mode to sync names back and forth.

The instruction set is in the game code and is only edited by Hello Games. The procedural system is just what converts those instructions into the game world.

Ignore this guy, Overwatch is awesome.

Nah, I agree with him. Overwatch gets super boring fast imo.
