No Man's Sky

If the comment sections of the review sites is anything to go by, lack of real multiplayer may actually be a good thing.

They may well update it with coop in the future. This game is just gonna grow from strength to strength imo

Hopefully most of the negativity will be filtered out by then.

If i recall Sean mentioned a while back they were playing on adding proper co-op multiplayer later on but it seems that they didnt expect players meeting each other so early on. here is a tweet from earlier this week:

We added a 'scan for other players' in the Galactic Map to try to encourage this happening. We wanted it to happen - but the first day?

I'm two-minded about getting this game. I only have some idea of what the game is about.

If I do It will be PS4.

Have a look at this Before you buy. I really like Gameranx stuff and this video is good and seems to be from a neutral stand point:

I am loving it.

It has a definite minecraftian feel to it. It is also the most visually stimulating game I have ever played.

The most interesting thing about it is the way you have to learn the languages of the other races.

I've spoken to real life mates who have the game and are playing it. Feedback all round is superb and I can't wait for PC launch on Friday

I don't see this game last. Watched the kid play it last night and I think within two days this will become super-repetitive and boring: go to planet, harvest material, complain about lack of inventory space, scan for objects, find upgrades, complain about lack of inventory space to install upgrades... rinse/repeat

I am also not quite sure what is the hype about the in-game music and the graphics being stunning - on the PS4 this is IMO pretty average, especially considering what a PS4 can output. Will try it out tonight myself, but I don't think I can get stuck on this for more than a week.

It will be extremely hard to include multiplayer when there is no actual netcode supporting multiplayer.

Murray answering questions on multiplayer,

the guy lied. It was all about the hype.

In what instance is it actually a good thing? The one property which enhances an online experience is the multiplayer aspect, even Elite: Dangerous got this right in some sense. Imagine Star Citizen without multiplayer, there is a reason why they created the persistent universe.…

So it seems if you give TakeAlot 2 months lead time to get the game on launch day, its not enough time... So launch day for me will be Friday the same as the PC guys. Ah well, going to enjoy trying the the demon hunter on WoW tonight instead :P

Came to this forum to see if anyone else received their order from Takealot. Preordered this back in May and it's been sitting dispatch for over 24 hours.

Sounds awfully bland and boring from what I've heard so far. Maybe I'll have another look in a couple of years when they've actually released some worthwhile features.

I don't think the hate Sean Murray is receiving over the lack of multiplayer is totally fair. It's highly unlikely he was lying about the multiplayer aspects of the game at the time of the interview, but rather decided later that realising those ambitions would massively delay the game again and he'd rather patch the feature in at a later date. His Twitter comments make me wonder if he actually thought no one would be able to locate each other in the time it would take to develop the multiplayer functionality. Pretty stupid if so.

Another aspect is that he is not to blame for the hype machine. The game was labelled as an almost infinite space exploration game, and that's exactly what it is. No doubt some features had to be sidelined, as is common with many games that lack certain features at launch. But bear in mind how difficult it is for an indie game to get the exposure that No Man's Sky has enjoyed. Sean Murray owes Sony a great deal for the massive marketing campaign they have funded. Murray has even appeared on several major talk shows. He had to be extremely tactful in how he tried to scale back the hype.

All things considered, I think NMS is an excellent achievement and I can't wait for my GOG copy to unlock.

Which platform?

It's only bland and boring if you're looking for the type of game that NMS isn't. As Sean Murray said himself, rather go play Destiny if you're looking for a space shooter/multiplayer experience.

Survival games are a huge genre now, and this one has pretty much blown them all out the water. I'm counting the hours until the PC release.

Got mine yesterday. Missed the pre-order run, and BT Games laughed at me when I asked if I could just walk in and get it. But, PSN Store had it at a <4Gb download - so didn't bother me much :D

Really enjoying it so far - I'm a huge fan of Minecraft, so this is right up my alley (obviously a little different). Struggling to wrap my head around the controls: Run is the R3 and scan is L3 - usually in any FPS, run is L3 (as its your move joystick), so thats a bit weird.

So what is NMS then? An interactive wallpaper? Because what gameplay is there seems boring af. What remains seems to be a game where you fly to different planets so you can see different variations of the same thing with no real meaningful way to interact with it. 30 year old men giggling about procedurally generated teletubbies, basically. I'm really not seeing the up points here. It's hardly like people were expecting a space shooter.

I guess it brings us back to the old question of "what do you actually do in No Man's Sky" and now the answer is finally here: nothing much really.
