No more ADSL resets

No Resets? Bullsh..

We have so many connection problems, line drops, sync problems. These are forced resets.

My ADSL at home resets up to 30 times a day. Looses sync all the time. Techie came out and found no problem :( (Who would have guesed this?)

Did the Techie come over put a little box on your line, go to the exchange and come back and say nothing was wrong.. If he did, take the box and shove it up his rear end.

Check your SNR and Line Attenutation, If they are our of spec, then bug them until the send a techie with the right tools to test the line

I personally think this is a non issue and people are complaining for the sake of complaining. If you have a DSL line and your session is reset periodically, 99% of the time you would not notice the difference or any interruption to service.
There is no reasoning other than to have a "static IP" to have any issues with this. But wait - most of the time people are assigned the same IP upon reconnect anyway. Try getting just that from BT in the UK - not a chance. Either pay for a static address - which are expensive the world over - or get a cheap and nasty dnydns solution.

Lets get real, the only reason people are complaining about resets is that it interrupts their large overnight downloads.

Telkom Internet stopped resets from Nov 01 '07 as per the ICASA ruling. There are some challenges with no resets - mainly related to monthly caps. For example if a user has been online for 4 months and he has downloaded 6GB and uploaded 3Gb - the session information recevied from SAIX, only tells you how much data has been transferred and how long the entire session has lasted for - There is no information to tell you what was used in what month - making calculating usage tricky. Some ISPs still implement a reset to avoid this problem - but in theory they are not complying to the ICASA ruling.

just incase anyone is interested at all....

On my line that has not worked. My router is often on for several weeks (with wireless you have to restart now and then) and I could show you the logs... 1200 12 may to 1200 13 may... 1200 13 may to 1200 14 may, etc.....

But I do disagree with you saying you cannot see how much data has been transferred in what month, etc. My ISP updates my account usage on an hourly basis, whether I disconnect or not (If I do disconnect it is available immediately).

They guys who do the large overnight downloads will have resuming programs in place. Whats used to be pain was when your downloading a 1.6gig Demo from fileplanet, and it gets to 1.5 gigs and they reset you.. Plus now you just lost 1.5 gigs of BW :(

What I also hated about it was during a 6 hour MC run in World of Warcraft and as it gets to the critical point.. Helkom resets. When you get back online, you have 40 of yours mates swearing at you because everyone died.

Not all servers support resuming... esp FTP sites. Your download manager might support it... but when you are getting near to the end of 4.5 Gb DVD ISO image... and the ADSL resets... when it comes back... Getright starts again at the beginning of the file!

And that DVD is Linux right :D

Though I do agree, the problem was that you just lost all your BW, and Telkom just smiled all the way to the bank as you had to buy more

happened to me twice with the latest OpenSUSE :(

was trying to get it on local... reset both times during the night.

why is it up to you what people can complain about?
I remember the same crap with Sentech; people on this forum would say we complained too much if we want the bandwidth we paid for.

for whatever reason the guy doesn't want resets, and the law says Telkom shouldn't reset him. Who cares why.

I never said that the ISP cannot show you that data - the TI tracker is up to date to the latest hour. What I said was the information in the packet sent by SAIX or any other Tier 1 provider only displays information for the entire session.

Providing up to the hour usage information and managing the session information to determine how much is assigned to one month and how much is assigned to another takes a bit work and a hell of a lot of logic that the ISP has to manage.

I know because I built such a system. Other ISPs are not bothering with this complex calculations that need to be done and are simply disconnecting users periodically as it is more convenient.

I do not know how many times I need to post this - but it looks like it may be a few. TELKOM DOES NOT ISSUE RESETS.

um, yes... the article does actually say...

Telkom no longer enforces any ADSL session resets.

so, what exactly is your point?

Which could be fixed by having a decent download manager.

I don't know how many times I need to post this, but having a decent download manager does not always help. Sometimes the servers do not support resuming.

You can repeat it as many times as you want... whether it is Telkom or the ISPs... but resets do happen sometimes for whatever reason.

I agree(I can see this at work on the server), but they have forced resets due to crappy lines.

As long as it is not due to TELKOM forcing a 24Hour reset it can be fixed. The Telkom reset was always the crux of the problems added on top of the rest. If its gone... Good for us. Ditto.

Oi some people are so narrow minded when it comes to life and the world around them. Just because it does not bother you, does not mean it does not bother others, and because it does bother others does not mean that they are doing somethin illegal.

Some of these comments could just as well have been made by Telkom. The internet is used for more things than surfing, e-mail, illegal downloading of whatever. If you don't know what other perfectly legal and legit uses there are, try making use your internet for some research and find out.

Who the hell cares who is enforcing resets, point is it is happening, and it should not. End of my bloody story, bye-bye.

amen, brother...
there are too many people here who have bought into Telkom's party line. A connection to the internet is just that. a connection. let me do with it as I please.
