No Service issue

It could always still be your tower that's the problem?

I probally need a service to activate the thing via iTunes? Because why does it keeps telling me there is no SIM card installed, I will be going to vodacom at 12PM and then its gonne work from them.. watch this.

Hmm yeah but that tells me that it's not picking the SIM card up properly... So i dunno..

I assume you've checked the micro-sim is inserted properly. Did you purchase the SIM or cut it yourself? Maybe you should purchase one if you cut it yourself.

I think you only need to have internet active on your PC - not on your phone

Try it with one (cheap one :p), although it says the price, once you press buy, it will say you have already purchase it and you can redownload it.

Fxit_man,

As the forum iPhone guru, what is your opinion of the "no service" problem? Hardware/software/bad towers?

It has happened to me three times in the last week (always fixed with a reboot), but still, it is quite annoying as I miss all my calls/SMSs/emails until I discover it. Haven't had this problem with 3G or 3Gs, but after doing some Googling I see that other people have. Would it be worth taking it in for repair, or rather just accept it and restart it when it happens? Its not like we have an Apple store in SA that replaces phones on the spot.

Also, this problem only started after I upgraded to 4.1 from 4.0.2, but I don't know if its just a coincidence

I am running my iPhone 4 without JB and Cydia now, will see if i get any "no service" again, so far its working 100% full signal without 3G and with 3G enabled i get 3bars

Just a quick question. I had the No Service prob this morning. SInce turning 3G off and Auto3G off, it is now fine, but there is a new icon next to my battery life. The icon is just the letter "N" with a box around it. Anyone know what it is?

Lol iPhone guru :p Thanks.

I agree with you in that i've only had problems since I upgraded to 4.1 from 4.0.1, and I never had these problems before. I was also using Auto3G before on 4.0.1 that and never experienced these "No Service" problems either..

Until now on 4.1; Only noticed the "No Service" issue happen to me the other day, then remembered your thread here and thought to myself if it wasn't to do with Auto3G. Personally, I have since disabled Auto3G and haven't had any "No Service" problems as such since. I'm still keeping an eye on it though.

So imo it:
- Could be that Auto3G and 4.1 aren't playing nice.
- Could be the 4.1 update that buggered something up
- Could be Vodacoms carrier settings that aren't playing nicely with 4.1? (If all affected people are on Vodacom that is) - doubt it

I'm personally thinking the majority of the problems are caused by Auto3G, maybe not solely, but that is contributing to the majority of problems imo combined with our towers / 3G coverage etc.

So, what I am doing for the moment, and I suggest others to do the same, is disabling Auto3G and monitoring the phones performance over time. Maybe an update for Auto3G will come if that is the cause.

And of course, lets post our findings here so we can get down to the bottom of this :)

Backgrounder afaik. The "N" is to do with the native mode setting in the backgrounder settings I think.

i have had that problem a few times... I find when I am at home in cape town ...not a single no service ... when I am in jhb i get it often ... especially here in cresta where the signal is really dodgy.

have turned off 3g and will see how that affects it...

Thanks for your thoughts fxit_man. In my case it is definitely not Auto3G, since my iPhone is not jailbroken and when it was I didn't have it installed.

So I think that 4.1 probably did something (I really hope its not a hardware thing). Lots of people in the US and UK are having the same problem, according to various international forums.

From my side, after turning off 3G completely this morning, I have not had a single issue. Phone is on EDGE/GPRS with 4-5 bars all the time. The lowest it has dropped to were 3 bars. And all my push emails are coming on time.

Hmm interesting.. Thanks

Lets keep each other posted

The problem is the phone is having a problem when moving out of 3G coverage , the switch over to Edge does not take place .you will never have this problem when using edge only , unless you are in an area with no coverage

But what's strange to me is that sometimes it will lose signal, say "Searching" and then find signal again, whether it is 3G/Edge/GPRS. But other times it will lose signal and not find it again and just give the "No Service" error instead of continually searching. Why is that?
