No speed limits. No caps.

no Internet?

So what is the use if you don't have internet? Or do private users share thier internet with others?

In My opinion, the use of the wug is to not pay for the gaming, voip, research as a lot of the users on the wugs have different skill sets.

The wug is more than just internet, it is a way of living.
I have learned more about networking, different OS's, hosting of reliable services from wugging than internet would allow me.

What makes the difference is that you could dial/start a one on one conversation with the local expert on the problem.

Personally i think in Cape Town we have more connected members than any wisp that get paid for there services, this speak for it self.

no, the sharing of internet is not allowed. But the sharing of content, resources and skills is! :D

luckily wireless technology can be used for other things besides providing internet.
some many people think that wifi = internet.

and for the guys that like to build stuff/make stuff work/make plans the wug is a exclent place to be. For example, bashTux and I hiked up the bronberg on Saturday carrying a PC and a UPS to replace the one that died on our tower (that we erected ourselves) on the mountain. (Luckily everything worked first time).

The use of the wug:
* I can play games with awesome pings with people from Hammanskraal to Benoni and almost Potch for free
* I can call any one on the wug on the VOIP for free
* I can transfer any file for free
* I can run any non-commercial I want - sandboxing
* I can become a member of the admin-team and learn alot

@ protzkrog: What hardware do one need to connect to the ptawug? Cost?

L3w13s : goto www.ptawug.co.za (if the IS issues has been sorted) check on the top right are the standard kit ads from miro and scoop. Those kits include everything you need to connect except a pole and cat5.
You can buy directly from miro or scoop on the PTAWUG dealer account.

Check the Getting Started page on www.ptawug.co.za for more detailed info about the kit

By watter stap in die proses is jy tans ?

last i checked the rivonia/edenburg area in jhb still had no coverage :(

hj2k think of return on investment. it's just setup fee and that's it, it wont cost you anything further, no line rental, nothing. even if setup costs were double it would still be a bargain imho

PTAWUG ;)

Been a member for 7 months now and when the going is good, it is AWESOME

2MB/s (yep not mbps) uploads and dowloads if your Line of Sight (LOS) is good and signal strengh high...

But be warned.... although it seems like a free for all, you will someday need to become involved in building High Sites or learning to fix a few things (or provide support on IRC).

The only way the network will survive (there is alot of tech support, but ABSOLUTELY no Service Level Agreements)...

I have already started saving after just a few months (and my kit has been paid off).

Just wish I had access to a few more high sites, but currently I will have to fix the one I used to connect to. That is just the way it is... If your access is not what it is: donate (time or money) to get a new High Site and your speed WILL increase. AMAZING!

Been wugging for over a month now and all I can say is that it surpassed my every expectation. The guys on the irc are super helpfull and even if you know snot about anything wireless of networking they will be able to help you hook you up the the awesomeness.
And yes there is no internet, but trust me once you start wugging your internet will be reserved only for banking and news. Big ups to the every single oke on the wug.

Well Mole thats not entirely true, someone needs to bring in the err bacon for the WUC to be of any interest, especially if your not into gaming much...

Great community nonetheless though...

Windows Updates via wug, Linux updates via wug, Linux distros via wug. I have uncapped myself and rarely use it these days to do any updates or downloading via the net. :)

Isnt that a WISP then ? So you would need a licence from Icasa then ?

his WUG connection and internet connection are seperate things.
There are user that run WSUS and linux update servers on the wug, it's not done through the internet.

Myself and another bloke on JAWUG both have mirrors of the Ubuntu update servers at home. We have so many machines that its cheaper for us that way. We then share those servers with the fellow wuggers to get their updates :)

Yeah man get it right. lol. Nothing internet related goes via the wug. My internet and wug connection is also splitted. Just some guy on the wug makes the updates available via the network. :)

Very interesting and tempting as well. The setup costs are a bit though. I'll have to save for a few months and then buy myself a 'present' :)
