No speed limits or caps: Wireless User Groups are growing

With no Internet connectivity it is simply a local community affair and anything of such ilk will have no appeal or use for most. There is file-sharing of course but better to take the risk on the Internet - safety in numbers :)

The reality is that a lot of WUG users do actually share their Internet connection with other WUG users. It's just not made public, for obvious reasons.

The Wug is a good medium, if you want to connect your home, and bussiness toghether, and still have a decent connection. to transfer work related documents. Also it is the perfect enviroment to "play" with networking.

Distance shouldn't be a problem. I've got trees in the way, getting -79dBm :(

Didn't matter too much for me, I get around -85dBm but with some tweaking it runs at 21Mbps with 99% CCQ (Clear weather and not much worse with hectic rain).

It really is more of a hobby than an "internet connection"

Think of having a LAN with some friends on a weekend but instead of having to all goto one house you can do it from home, like internet with much better pings.

I get on an average day 39ms ping from Joburg to Pretoria.

For those that want to know what the speed is like on WUG in Cape Town

For the PE folks...

The PEWUG had it's AGM about 2 weeks ago and have a new committee who are committed to expand their member base. They are also busy designing a new website... http://www.pewifi.co.za/services/

There are already 5 sites in PE and the PEWUG is actively pursuing a few more.

Current sites:

LMH - Lovemore Heights (Running)
TCH - Theesecombe (Running)
WST - Westering (Running)
NTP - Newton Park (Running)
WAL - Walmer (Running)

The Bluewater Bay site is almost ready (maybe already fully functional by now). The idea is to use this site to relay the signal back towards Parsons Hill, Millard Grange, Richmond Hill, etc. as there is no LOS to these areas from the existing sites.

Well done to the Wuggers for their hard work and growing their networks.

BTW: We did ask JAWUG for feedback, but they did not come back to us.

I must say I am quite disappointed in nobody from Jawug getting back to you for feedback.

I really want to join the CTWUG and I hope that I can find someone to help me - I am in the Melkbos area. I am on the CTWUG forum too
