Your point is very valid, and every political party will play on people's emotions to persuade them to vote for that political party. The difference is that in this country, the chances are pretty good that those emotions will be acted upon. 70% vote in elections for an incompetent government is adequate evidence thereof.

Silly question, Except for the ballot box is there a way the citizens could make the government accountable?

Yes, mass action works. Remember the taxi driver's strike that crippled Joburg for a day? Immediately the government entered into talks with the relevant groups. The problem is generally getting enough supporters to rallies, and that is more difficult than you will think.

There are vast socio-economic issues that affect the average SA voter. If I remember, the president's state of the nation address covered them. Bread and butter issues like access to water, sanitation, grants are some of the major issues for the poor people. I take those for granted because i'm not poor.

Are the Afrikaaners who vote ANC public about the support for the organisation?

So would this mean the DA is primarily composed of English speaking White South Africans and Coloured people?

Tony Leon has repeatedly year in and out voiced the importance of all those issues. I believe that in the Western Cape the DA is delivering on those issues as we speak? There was very little progress in that regard in the WC during ANC 'rule'

Why isn't the media (press) highlighting these DA's 'successes' in the Western Cape? The reason I highlighted press is because I know if I ask about broadcast you'll go on about the SABC bias blah blah blah ?

Just one thing: a vote for an organisation does not necessarily make you a supporter of that organisation!

I'm a coloured (my mother is white and father is coloured) and none of us are DA or ANC supporters. My mom and dad voted different parties last time but before that they voted the same party. I have voted for a different party every election, and never once for the DA. Most of my white english speaking friends who voted voted for DA, and most of my white Afrikaner friends (who voted) voted a mix between ANC, FF+, DA and even IFP. I know a lot of them didn't vote.

I think it's widely accepted that the DA enjoys mostly the English speaking white vote.

Good news doesn't sell newspapers ;) You'll have to ask them why they don't report on the successes as often as they report on the failures.

No we don't - we slant it with political and racial bias and slam it if we don't agree with it. We all look for something to agree with, and if we don't we dismiss it. If you take what the press prints and says as gospel then I would suggest you go see a shrink.
