No 'theatrics' for Mbeki

Cape Town - The government will continue to do everything possible to act against crime, but without the "theatrics", President Thabo Mbeki said on Thursday.

Responding in the national assembly to criticism of his approach to crime, Mbeki said: "This I must say - for 64 years I have never had either the ability or the courage or the need to resort to grand theatrical gestures."

"There will be no empty gestures, no prancing on the stage and no flagellation, but we will continue to act against crime, as decisively as we have sought to do throughout the years of our liberation.

"From us, from the government, will issue no words that are lightly spoken," he said.

Mbeki was replying to points raised during the debate on his State of the Nation address.

"We must respond to the cold reality that, as in other countries, the overwhelming majority of violent crimes against the person occur in the most socio-economically deprived areas.

"They require strong and sustained community interventions focused on crime prevention.

"I stand by these conclusions and reaffirm that the government will do everything possible to act on what we have promised," he said.

 what a lame d1ck president.

My internet really too slow to open news24 so I cant see the time of the article, but how much did the riots in Soweto, about crime have to do with this "new" approach on crime.

Pathetic.

"There will be no empty gestures"

Strange, empty gestures pretty much sums up his presidency.

If he was an inspiration then his cabinet would be supporting his words with actions, instead of ignoring them and allowing his speeches to become empty rhetoric. Simply put, he can't even inspire the people he chose to do the jobs for which he chose them.

He is strong?.. How so?

His cabinet CONSTANTLY defy him or ignore him and nothing happens about it. How is that strong? It just shows a completely incapable leader.

You must wait for December and see. They respect T'Boz.

No need to wait, we can see how "strong" he is by the complete lack of action on any of the points he ever makes. He just talks and his underlings just pretend to listen. In the end, the fact remains that he is either unwilling or useless.

complete lack of action? Didn't he fire Zuma? or that doesn't count as Action!!!

How long as he been president and all you can point to is one action? Generally he is nothing more than empty promises. For example see telecoms and the reason why this forum even exists.

He has pronounced on so many issues, so many times, and the most that ever happens is commitees about commitees and so forth. There has been BUGGER all concrete action...

And firing Zuma, he almost HAD to do...

I was correcting "complete lack of action" and I think I have archived that.
