Nokia 5800 V50.0.005

So far so good - I am happy with V50 but I was hoping they would do the big first letter things in the contacts list too (like in the music player and on the N97). Appartently there was some improvements made to the camera - most likely noise reduction stuff - I'll check that out later.

To me it is just amazing how this phone that I got for R1800 (used) can do so much. I am still very much upset for paying in R3000 on a Topup315 just to get a N97. What a waste of money that was.
 
If i update to v50 via NSU (Checked it, update is available) will i have to reload the maps software and maps again?
 
Map data and voices on are on memory card - so no. Mine is still on the phone and so is Afrikaans navigation.
You are using Ovi 3.03 right ?
 
OTA firmware update completed ok but now I can't connect to my PC using the USB cable. I've tried the latest versions of PC Suite and OVI Suite.

I get a USB phone parent error and OVI Suite crashes on startup. Anyone have any ideas?

I've tried uninstall/reinstall of PC Suite and various older versions of PC Suite.

Fix found. Uninstalled "PC Connectivity", re-install OVI Suite and it works now :)

I was really hoping for that too. Don't know why they decided not to make it that way :(
 
Okay, I managed to get the Nokia Software Updater (v2.4.8en) to find the v50 firmware for my 5800 (after changing the product code).

It started downloading, saying it had ~ 141 MB to download. Then, once it reached 141 MB it just kept going and the total kept increasing. I killed it at ~ 150 MB. What's the deal with this?

I remember trying it once before with the v40 firmware update, and it did the same thing. But that time I only killed it at ~ 500 MB - my poor cap :cry: Eventually I just did an OTA update for v40, but now when I check with *#0000# for v50, no updates are found :confused:

This available now for stock codes? I'm still on the MTN approved version 40.0.005.C01.01.

My NSU seems to need updating more than my phone- don't want to chow too much data if the update itself isn't available yet...

I changed my prod code to Euro Black at the beginning of the year. With the stock product code (MTN RED) I'd still be stuck with v21
 
Updated OTA on British Isles Navi and everything working fine. Only problem I had was after the firmware was installed there was an installation that was run and it got an installation error for some reason. I think that it was the Quickoffice trying to install. Only way to confirm it to reload the firmware and check what happens, but I don’t want to have to change all my settings again after the firmware restore.
 
I finally upgraded to v50, my phone was still on v21!!! I used the Euro Red product code. The software is definitely updated, my phone now has scrolling, latest Ovi Maps, updated music player etc. What I find strange is that after the update, ALL my settings, contacts, messages, applications etc are EXACTLY the way it was before, without restoring any backups or anything. Even my installed theme showed up. The only thing that was "lost" was the time and date settings. While this is convenient, I actually WANTED to do a clean install and get rid of all the clutter. Is this NORMAL because I was under the impression that a firmware upgrade should delete everything from the phone, and get it to "factory" state?

I also noticed that the auto-rotate now only works when the phone is at an almost 90 deg angle, and the rotation is a bit sluggish. Also, Ovi Maps does not work. I even downloaded the app from the web and re-installed. It opens but as soon as I choose any menu item it freezes or exits.

Any help with these issues will be highly appreciated.
 
You can do a hard reset if you want it to go back to the out-of-box state. For the 5800 :
"Press and hold RED + GREEN + CAMERA when powering up. Keep the keys pressed until you get the shaking hands. That should fully reset the device, with a lock code of 12345."
 
Not to be funny or anything but personally I think the new firmware is crap!
 
Phone is slow, unstable crashes, the auto-rotate thing is unpredictable at best. Eish I regret having upgraded from V40

Upgrade to V40 last night. It's pretty sleek. Thanks for the warning guys, I'll stick around until we have v60 :p
 
V50 has been excellent for me! I have had no crashes, no reboots and no freezes :D. Battery life has been great,better than V50. Im loving the now built-in Ovi Sync app,as i often write Notes, and Calendar entries,and add Contacts, ive set it to Auto sync everytime i add something new in any of the 3,and does it with no prob at all,fantastic. :)
The Music Player alone is worth the update, kinetic scrolling in it is smooth as butter,way better than in V40, the mini album arts are awesome and make it even easier to quickly identify what you're looking for,best of all the Music Player now reads ID3Tags properly it seems, some songs that just had the track number now have album art and track name.
The Web browser has been incredibly improved, A LOT faster, takes less RAM, and has kinetic scrolling in web pages,brilliant.
Overall this was a great update. If you're having problems with it i suggest a format.
