I’m trying to access the internet with a Nokia 6234 via PC Suite on my PC and after much trouble managed to get connected by changing to VLive as AP in the software itself. The connection is slow, drops every few minutes and takes 3 or 4 tries to re-connect etc. After backtracking in this forum a bit, I think I need to set the APU to “internet”, but after many hours and 2 support calls to 155, have had no luck. Keep on getting a “subscribe to packet data first” error. They eventually gave up and said I must contact Nokia for a solution. While browsing I see that my prepaid data does get used. Does anybody have any idea? The phone is pre-configured with VLive settings and the only other AP listed is Vodacom. I have also setup a user defined internet APN, but all to no avail....

Thanks.

It could be your settings, try the following link: [searchforum]CGDCONT[/searchforum], and yes use internet as your APN, but have 155 Provisioned your SIM card for data, and is this pre-paid or contract?

PS: Welcome to MyBroadband :).

He said that he managed to connect after a while, but using the vlive APN. It seems like he only has teh vlive APN provisioned on his SIM.

Once You get your internet APN provisoned, change your configuration settings to Vodacom, and it should then work like a charm :)

Hi, thanks for the welcome! It's pre-paid. I will follow your suggestions.

Vodacom4me reports Data as active....

Thanks.

Vodacom4me? Did you confirm this with 155? Dial 155, choose option 5, and make sure its active. I once activated the data services for a customer. 3days later he comes back, still not working. i call again, and the consultant says its not active, but IT HAS been activated a few days before. So they struggled to get it active. But the customer hasnt come back yet, so i hope that all is well.

So just make double sure, becoz these things to happen.

Thanks for the input, Iam3G.

Vodacom4me reports the following active:

Data 9600 b/s
GPRS
GPRS APN
Internet APN

I will phone 155 and just confirm...

:DWoohoo! It's working now. Intenet APN was not activated, I just presumed it was from their website:o. The Lady said it could take 1 to 24 hours, but managed to connect within 30min. Browsing is a lot faster now, will see about the stability.

Thanks for the help. Great forum.

Hi Led

Can you please check whether the network mode setting can be changed on this phone?
I've read somewhere in the forum that this is not possible.
I'm looking to get this phone to use it as a modem to connect to internet.
But if I can't change the network mode to UMTS Only (3G) then it's not gonna be worth getting it - if it's always in dual mode then i'm sure i will be getting lotsa disconnects as the phone will be searching for the strongest signal.

Please let me know....

Thanx in advance ...

Hi UtianG,

I can only choose between GSM and Dual. Sometimes I connect at 3G, but mostly at Edge speeds. Been searching for alternative firmware, but no success so far. I am seriously considering getting a 3G card. I still get disconnections, roughly about 2 per 2 hour session, although when it works it works well. Strangely this morning I cannot surf using the Internet APN (it connects though, but DNS unpingable), using VLive now, so it's hard to say what is phone related problems and what is due to the network. It is a nice phone, but not (imho) really suitable for PC modem, it needs to be charging while connected for more than an hour and the signal strength is sensitive to phone position. For basic email and quick browsing it should be sufficient though. I got it to bridge the time it takes Telkom (they said 2 months) to transfer my ADSL line to my new house, but think I'll just cancel and get into 3G. No phone line rental, pay as u go, roaming etc. Let me know if you need more info.

Think it's the network. Symtoms starter yesterday afternoon where you can connect on pre-paid but get no data down. I'll post updates in the 'Everythings broken' thread.

Hey Led

Thanx for the feedback.

The 6234 has the "UMTS only" setting removed by Vodafone :(
The vanilla version (6233) has UMTS only.
