Nokia announce free Maps (smart2go) solution

@ stepper - it is possible to download it to your PC first and then to your phone - just follow the download link, it will ask whether you'll want to download to PC or phone.

Bah, humbug, Nokia 6600 not on the list... :(

My Nokia 6680 not on the list either. Will have to wait until September when I can upgrade

Is there a way to download maps to pc and load them to your phone without being online. I ask this because I use my phone for internet connectivity and its kinda impossible to load the maps directly to my phone when its being used as a modem.

The only way to do this is by installing the program onto your miniSD card. Then remove the card from your phone and attach it to your pc with a card reader. Then install the map via the pc directly onto your miniSD card.

Software is awesome. Even if you don't have a GPS unit. You can search for restaurants, petrol stations etc. And it is very fast as well - I was surprised by this - it actually runs faster than the satellite navigation in my car.

I suggest to try nav4all.com for a nicer smaller gps app.
If you cant get this one.

You can get a bluetooth GPS (Holux GPSlim 236) at R700 plus R125 shipping though bidorbuy.co.za. I purchased mine though nav4all in Holland, and am very happy with the unit. It works with a standard Nokia BL-5C battery, charges though USB (though cannot connect though USB with the supplied cable), and does about 10 hours on a charge, without the power saving mode. Works well with my Nokai 6680, HP iPaq and notebook.

mmmmmmmmm a 29 MB map ... Handymap has maps for South Africa which is about 200 MB ... that is a huge difference ... i wonder how good the Nokia stuff is

Looks very complete - don't know what Handymap offers tho

1. I tried Nav4All - could not get it to work with demo map of Cape Town - I did not have an accoutn registered, so maybe that was the problem. Also, I do not have a GPS unit.

2. The map of SA on smart2go is exceptionally comprehensive. Note that the program uses you data connection (therefore data charges) to find your search terms/addresses/places of interest etc. 29mb may also only be for SA and not other countries.

3. Only drawback is downloading the 29MB map directly on your phone - takes forever (1 hour, maybe more) with an ADSL connection. Not sure if this is a bottleneck from the PC, via the USB to the phone. I have not tried installing directly onto a miniSD card with a card reader.

4. Another drawback is if you reformat your phone, you will have to download the 29MB again.

other than that i'm quite impressed ;)

Help with .NET

Can one of you clever computer types please help.
I have downloaded the Smart2Go software onto my phone, Nokia N80.
Then downloaded the MapLoaderSetup software onto my laptop.
Now that I want to install the Map Loader software I get the following message:
"Your .NET Framework version: 1.4.4.
Required Version: 2.0.5 or greater."

What does this mean? I tried to do the .NET upgrade but it would appear to be quite a large file, cant remember how much. Is it realy necesisary?
Thanks in anticipation of your help

id say yes ... you have to ...

The file you want is dotnetfx.exe and it's about 30MB. Get it from (eg microsoft.com). Maybe ask someone with a faster connection download it for you and save it to optical media (cd/flash drive) and install from there. Next time you launch the Maploader it will be OK and proceed.
It might also be on other CD like service packs, Visual Studio etc if you have any of those.

Hi
i downloaded and installed smart2go and the maploader, im downloading the South Africa maps on the memory Card of my Nokia N80, but the download 100% complete and time remaining is -5minutes -30seconds (and still counting) (and its minus 5 minutes). is this normal? should i just leave it to run or is there something I am not doing right?

Thanks

Had the same problem, tried with memory card in card reader, worked fine.

My issue though is that there seems to be a difference in detail available on my N80 and on my WM5 JASJAM. On the N80 I can drill down to street level, while on the JASJAM only major roads are displayed.

Anyone else have the same experience or know how to fix it?

(I would ask this directly of the smart2go guys, but can't find a contact. You can only give anonymous feedback on their site :(

Hi all. I downloaded smart2go on my K-Jam and Maploader on my PC. When I try to download maps it picks up the memory card but doesn't download any maps. It stays on 0.0% and doesn't show any time remaining. Stayed like this for over an hour. Is there any alternative method of downloading maps?

I think you need to run the app once prior to installing maps.
