Nokia dumping Symbian Mobile OS

I suppose if they are going to use Meego instead of Android, because both is Linux, it will be easier for the XDA fellows to maybe get Android running on it? Think it's a good move.

Good riddance. I hated Symbian. I've only had one Nokia phone - the N95, and hated it with a passion. I just could not understand why so many people chose Nokia. It was quite a relief when it got stolen. I do not miss it one bit

Should have been done ages ago, maybe then N97 wouldnt have been such a failure!

Symbian is best for the elderly...my mother just cannot work on another phone...
symbian will still have a market but like they said not in the smartphone one...

Awesome move from Nokia! Meego is an awesome operating system.

It's much more open than either Android or iOS and is supported by Intel and Nokia.

You can already download Meego mobile and install it on your N900, if you want. There's also desktop and netbook versions available.

Great news!!

Was very loyal to my Nokia but I recently switched to BlackBerry and haven't looked back. Nokia has never really made "cool" phones, the functionality was ahead of the other makes back in the day but even there they have been overtaken. They helped pave the way for the better phones at least lol.

I got the impression that Nokia is only dumping Symbian on their highend divices. which means that the cheapy nokia versions will still run it. cant say I like symbian much at the moment. had to work on it for a group project and its a pain!

...THINK ABOUT IT GUYS

...Nokia will never totaly dump Symbian, bcoz of the X, C, E Series they should still use Symbiam. like they said on the report "FOR THE HIGH END PHONES" meaning the N-Series.
...Nokia is a home to Symbian.

This is pretty much what they said earlier the year. Series40 will be for ultra basic phones with their main features of "flashlight and FM Radio" leaving Symbian to fill the gap where Series40 was commonly found. This will be a serious threat for the competition since Series40 was not a multitasking OS and neither was a lot of the phones on offer from competing brands in the same price range.

LOL - so yeah - Symbian continues to kick ass, now it can just be had for a lot less on basic phones.

Easy to say that now, but the N95 was propably one of the most popular and beloved Nokias in the past few years - I know, I owned one.

Glad to see the mobile OS flock getting trimmed, but would have liked to see some of the new kids like Samsung's Bada and HP/Palm WebOS go first.

At least it is a move in the right direction - Like the desktop OS market, only one or 2 or 3 mobile OS will survive (Android, iOS and Win Mob 7?).

Hate to break it to you but Symbian is not getting trimmed, its just becoming more mainstream now on what was previously Series40 devices.

I dug the Symbian series, but obviously time hasn't been kind to it. Here's hoping I can get a pay hike so I can get an N900 ;)

so if the nseries is going to run meego should make it easier to write proper apps for it? also will all the n series phones be supported and change from symbian to meego?
