Nokia Lumia 730

Possibly. I think I got tripped up thinking it had LCD because we lost Glance on the 730. :(

You know the lack of glance is not really an issue for me. The phone has double tap, and there's a nice lockscreen app that you can customize to your heart's content. So I used that with double tap, if the phone notified me of something then I just double tap the screen to see what is going on.

1. Do you find double-tap works on and off? My G2 works 95% of the time with one double tap. The 730 is less than 50% first time - more often than not I'm reaching for the power button.
2. Which lockscreen app? :)

Double tap works perfectly on my 520, lost the feature on my 630. Maybe adjust your screen sensitivity?

...why cant we load WP on other devices?

I'd imagine there's a large number of reasons, but the man one was that prior to WP8.1, the WP device required physical navigation buttons (power, volume and camera). This meant that manufacturers couldn't use the same device for WP or Android because Android uses on-screen buttons.

Now, WP 8.1 offers support for on-screen buttons and we'll see more manufactures release devices with either Windows Phone 8.1 / Windows 10 or Android.

Yup, spent a while yesterday figuring out which tiles work best for me. Still enjoying the phone.

WP 8.1 offers a wide range of customisations to the start screen. Besides changing the size and number of tiles available for the start screen (more columns), you can also change the background photo, etc.

Some people have the most amazing start screens and sometimes I find myself just staring staring at my mine :-)

It's one of the first things I played with, and I really enjoy how you can use the tiles and a wallpaper to your advantage to make things look really cool. Prefer it over Android's home screen and well there is nothing special about IOS at the moment.

It could potentially be that Qualcomm chips are digitally signed for only specific Operating systems. Thought I'm just guessing here. The other issue might be getting certain things like NFC to work on a win phone takes a different approach to NFC on android. Currently I am still stuck with my Xperia V, and holy hell can I not wait to go over to win.

I dont want fancy features to NFC, They must just make the basic functions to work. Like the camera, Internet and Wifi. It pains me to have a phone that costs thousands of rands, and preforms like this.

Maybe just get one of those custom Android ROM's then that's got all the unneeded features removed. And slap on Nokia/Windows lockscreen and that Nokia launcher + or whatever it is called. It's what I would do.

There is no real custom roms for the Huawei, just "unofficial" official roms :p

Quickly scanned through it. I have read that the windows phone internet explorer has issues with tabs. So feel free to look into that :P I will see if I can do the same on my side.

Why are you not using a background on your home screen?
Which apps are you considering to buy? I have looked at app prices and it's surprising how well priced they are.
For youtube viewing, I read that metrotube is amazing. So look into it.

How do you find cortana? At work we actually took the Nokia 730, Xperia V and an Iphone 5s and paced the 3 phone's search companions against each other. It was interesting, and Cortana won on a couple of levels. At the very least she had a personality that entertained us where the other search engines were sort of dead. She was accurate as long as we were okay with no metric system. And speed wise they seemed to more or less be the same. She did put Siri to shame though.

I am using a background as of this morning - and it makes quite a difference! Now I'm on the lookout for transparent tiles... :D

The apps I'm going to pony up for are generally to remove ads. Off the top of my head, MetroMail, MetroTube, a few games, Peregrine (if I can't find a better Twitter client)... I still need to see if the new update for MetroTube fixes the issues it had re playback.

Cortana is simmering in the background for the moment. I haven't had much call for her as yet. I didn't use Google Now's speech much either.

Yeah I also never used these search engine companions much. But Cortana is handy for reminding me about things.

I might suggest that you search around online before buying these apps as there could be a possibility that there are better ones out there.

I have read this morning that metrotube's latest update has fixed the playback bug.

Yeah, tried MetroTube just now - preload works, playback threw an unhandled exception. :( That's the great thing about the Store though - try before you buy. Google has the 2hr refund, but you still have to pony up first.

A die-hard Android user myself but I just had to try this Windows Phone thing. A few irritations I found on the 630 (not sure if all issues will be the same on the 730 as most are WP 8.1 related I think)

  1. Phone doesn't get time from network, need to set it manually. Internet and all internet related services doesn't work if time or date is wrong.
  2. Why the hell is the All Settings menu non-alphabetical? Bloody ridiculous!
  3. IE is the default browser and you cannot change it. IE works well but doesn't feature background tabs which sucks donkeyballs. UC Browser is OK but I stupidly removed my SD card where it was installed before uninstalling the app, I'm now battling to re-install it. Surfy is OK but you have a limited amount of tabs you can have open. Opera doesn't work half the time.
  4. There should be more volume settings, ideally splitting the current Ringer + Notifications & Media + Apps into 4 separate ones (at the very least split Media + Apps)
  5. The phone itself operates smooth as silk but it does slow down on the odd occasion (slow to respond). I'm sure the 730 with double the amount of RAM should be sharp(ish).

Will probably find a few more quirks shortly

1. I believe that this feature was added in the denim update, not 100% on this one.
2. This has been fixed in the update after denim settings are listed alphabetically. (I actually think they need to rethink the settings completely and get a better working layout going there)
3. Yeah not too sure about this one, I'll also look at browsers and see if I find a good alternative.
4. In the denim update there are a fair amount of settings where you press the volume rocker. I will take a look at this tonight and get back to you.
5. Yeah have not experience any slow back other than when you are playing a 3D intensive game, and go to home screen and then back to the game, it takes a little while to start the game up again. It's about 3 seconds at longest in my experience. I'm perfectly okay with this though.
