Nokia Lumia 920 unveiled

Looks awesome on a number of fronts and it has sharp corners, so definitely not a copy.

It's a real pity it's come at this late stage when I've already made that move away from Nokia.

Oustanding design and specs, pity it doesnt come with android.

mmmmm, wireless charging is a dream.

Hmmm, might be worth a look, if the pricing isn't too bad.

I think they have joined the party too late. It will take years of good reputation, before smartphone users of any significant number, will trust them enough to try them out. Most users have settled with their favourite Samsung/iPhone/Blackberry, and have formed a relationship with their manufacturer

Anybody got more info on this qi charging pad? The downfall of these things in the past has been their low power and sluggish charge rate. I remember the first ones coming out more than 5 years ago. Surely most phones bar the iPhone now use microusb, so until apple starts using it, there's still the compatibility issue. So let's say then that it's benefit is that it can charge multiple devices simultaneously. What kind of range and throughput will it have?

I cant find much info on google about the specifics.

The icons appear to arranged on a grid pattern, and the inner edges of the device/screen are rounded. Clearly this is Nokia violating Apple's patents, the only saving grace for Nokia is that it runs Windows and therefore should be classified as "not a smartphone".

I think the advantage for Nokia is that they have a fairly decent patent portfolio of their own, what with having pioneered mobile phones and all. And if apple go after the os, it's not Nokias issue :)

Looked on www.gsmarena.com. They have a specs page and a new announcement but no test drive. Wireless charging not detailed at all.

Looks like a nice phone, hopefully it will just not cost too much.

The size and weight, however, is bothering me.

Lumia 920 - 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7 mm
Galaxy SIII - 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm

The screen size to phone size ratio is much better on the SIII, it seems.

Also, why is it so heavy (185g), while the SIII (with a larger screen) only weighs 133g?

It's made from the same polycarbonate material as the Lumia 800/900, which is a metal alloy and is unscratchable (in the sense that it has the same colour all the way through so any scratches don't take off the paint). Versus SGS3 which is basically plastic. It does have a larger bezel than the S3 but the same screen resolution. I don't think it'll make a difference.

Is it Android that has conditioned your mind to forget what product differentiation means?

I'm looking forward to windows phone maturing and gaining market share, but for me, for now atleast, i'm a little reluctant to commit to 24 months because the tiled metro interface might be a touch stifling. Nilay Pital calls it "beautiful handcuffs", which so far i kinda agree with. In a perfect world you could get the phone with whatever OS you wanted. I find it frustrating that Nokia has so heavily shackled itself to Microsoft when they should do what Samsung does and build a variety of handsets with different OS's, because clearly they are building some of the best hardware on the market. Their designs are unique and beautiful.

It really is a stunning phone, perhaps in 2 years once WP has settled i'll try it out.

I really enjoy the Android experience, but these devices along with WP8 looks promising. Glad they went with the Krait processors. Might try one of these out on a next upgrade.

Good, that explains the weight. The unscratchable surface sounds like a fair trade-off to me. I would have liked a Lumia without the large black border around the screen though.

All in all, I think Nokia is moving in the right direction, and I truly hope they become a bigger player to increase competition.

You know the logistics of making a phone with any possible OS? It's nearly impossible - you'd end up with a nightmare of XDA roms and possible bricking, and lawsuits and I don't even know what. Yea you're stuck with one constrained UI but at least it is a really nice UI. I actually have mostly given up on modding my Android devices since they improved the stock UI to the point where it's basically good enough for what I need.

I just meant they should release an android version with the same/similar lumia design. I wasnt implying they should cater for every OS in existence. :p

Whew I nearly had a haemorrhage :D.

Yea Stephen Elop made his loathing for Android pretty clear, there's not much chance of him ever going to Android now. A bit late anyway as their resources are being depleted badly.

He is clearly betting the farm because Microsoft have guaranteed them a buyout/bailout if WP isn't a quick enough success.
