Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

ok, so I got my N82 and Omnia

the first thing I can pick up about the Omnia is that its basically on charge now, but theres no charging indicator? Should there be one? Is there one?

k thats pretty lame, the Omnia power button glows red, but its so soft u can hardly see it.

a colleague just got the f480 samsung and its got a nice little battery graphic on the screen while its charging.

The biggest, major difference so far is the Omnia screen is really crappy, ag its ok i guess, didnt think it would bug me so much, but damn, not very good resolution, just cant compare the quality of the 16 million colors on the Nokia. Working on the Omnia and then going on the Nokia, its like chalk and cheese as far as the quality of the screen goes. Still, for my R264pm with 7.2 HSDPA, Garmin license and 16GB of memory, I can live with it. But I wont make that mistake again, the screen is the thing u use the most, it MUST be hi res so colors and MMedia display perfectly. I'm going to see how avi playback looks on the Omnia and report back.

Of course, also the camera on the Omnia isnt worth mentioning, I think it takes pics at the same quality as my Nokia N70 2MP. Not hot at all!.
Thats why I use my Nokia N82 for images.

The touch screen is pretty honed, better than I've used in a long time. All the input options are also cool, mouse or touch.
I dont really need the stylus, this is the reason why I think they included it as an after thought, cause u really dont actually need it, once u get used to the touch KB.

The Nokia is still built way more solid.

The apps and flexibility of windows mobile gives u a lot more UI configuration options, basically u can also play with ROMS and make your device look like a Diamond or whatever else u would like.
I wouldnt try too match hacking on Symbian, as Symbian seems a lot more tighter and less configurable, but I guess thats what makes it more stable.

I'm quite surprised by the comments about the screen as this was punted as a plus for the Omnia in this battle. But I suppose as rightly pointed out by Dudley it is 16M colours versus 256K colours (65K effective).

It is going to be interesting hearing your feedback Dudley... but I suppose the N82 has had a head start as you have had it for a while now...
 
ya, I have to admit, its as clear as day, the screen is nice and big,make no mistake, its a real treat, but its not 16million colors. You can notice the difference like a kick in the head as I switch between using the two devices.

Saying that, the passed few days have revealed the Omnias secret powers and while this is my first WinMo device, I have to say, its damn nice. The messaging centre is very efficient and organisation of ones emails and sms etc are neat and tidy with lots of options to configure.
I have to say, Nokias are built really well, I have to be extra careful not to drop the Omnia, I swear it will shatter in a million pieces, maybe not, but I reckon u got only one chance to find out :)
With the Nokia, it can handle quite a few knocks and it still keeps going flawlessly.

I think the whole cellphone comparison exercise is damn tough, because the Omnia really shines in some cases. The large screen is great for the Garmin GPS Maps, it is the best mapping I've used, stating the obvious I guess. The Omnia deal though is extremely good value for money, with 16GB storage, lifetime Garmin on the device and a slick new WinMo version, I'm starting to enjoy it a great deal. I even managed to get the camera to take better pics in the dark, which a lot of ppl complained about before. Basically u need to reduce the brightness when using flash in dark rooms, also switch to indoor/outdoor setting and experiment with the photo sizes. I got a good mix of settings now that are producing some great pics. OF COURSE, my N82 still reigns in that department.
I've also noticed the N82 gets satelite signals a lot quicker, but i must still play with the A-GPS on the Omnia, not sure it its active.

Bottom line, if u ask me which one is better, well, u can t actually say, because both devices outperforms the other in certain areas. In my opinion, I love both and it really comes down to what u like in a device. All I can say is that if you get the Omnia u will love it. It does have a lot going for it.
