I had exactly the same problem (re licensing). Openbit provide the license key. Fortunately I have it via email, but I still have to go through the purchase process and enter it every time I try to navigate!

Garmap on Nokia

I am also acquiring a Nokia N95 - withing next day or two.

I read the posting here about the maps etc, and contacted Garmap.

The emails & replies went as follows:

Hi Robert,

do you have a Garmap version compatible with the Nokia N95 smartphone's built-in gps?
I am getting one of these phones and would rather use your maps if I can than the ones supplied with the phone.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike

We supply the Southern Africa Streetmaps v1 mapset to Nokia under contract for use in a selected range of Smartphones; the N95 being one of their latest, is compatible with Garmap, but please confirm this when you talk to your provider today. Nokia will either bundle the unit with a Garmin GPS10x or a similar Nokia GPS receiver.

Yours sincerely

Hi Robert,

The N95 comes with built-in (integrated) GPS receiver. Do I assume correctly that this would then be compatible?

Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike

I don’t have access to the N95 blurb, but undoubtedly; Nokia use our mapset exclusively for the their Smartphone GPS enabled range.

Yours sincerely

I don't know if this is of any use to any of you, but once I actually receive my phone I can hopefully provide more feedback.

ask them if they have seen a nokia n95 working with garmap using the internal gps ...

sounds to me like they want you just to buy the software ... he does not really answer your questions and plays it safe ... he should have said:" Yes we have had garmaps installed on a nokia n95 and it works 100% with the built in GPS unit) ...

This is definitely useful, thanks for the feedback. I am very interested to see if your new N95 is compatible. I agree with adamr though, his answers are a bit evasive, but could be the result of lack of knowledge more than anything

From Garmin Forum re N95

was reading posts on Garmap forum, and basically the same question was asked there regarding compatibility with Nokia N95 internal GPS receiver.

The reply there was as follows:

HappyCamper

We're contracted to supply Nokia with Southern Africa Streetmaps, so the new N95 (with the integrated GPS) will be sold with a bundled Garmap SAS mapset on the accompanying data card.

We don't more informationan on this new SmartPhone at this stage.
Cheers

Really keen to get mine now (being delivered this afternoon) and then I can see for myself.

More on Garmaps

Well, I finally have my hands on my new N95 :D

The bad news is, no Garmaps with it . . . . just before receiving phone I received the following 2 emails :

Fisrtly . . .

Unfortunately the software has not been launched yet it should be available in about 2-3 weeks and we will then be able to assist with the codes.

Hi Mike

I have checked with Avnic for more precise details; yes we will supply Nokia with Garmap mapsets of South Africa for the N95, but that the adapted mapset will only be available for the unit in two to three weeks time (perhaps sooner).

The N95 arrives loaded with limited mapset capabilities (not ours); the owner then has an option to buy a Garmap CD at a nominal price (about R35.00) on a 30-day trial; thereafter if so decided (after the 30-day trial), the owner can buy the mapset for permanent use at a cost of about R990.00 (probably through an online registration process); I cannot at this stage establish the precise details.

Nokia? I tried unsuccessfully to clarify this with Nokia, but after being referred to five or six different numbers, was unable to speak to anyone more informed than a help desk staffer (who was misinformed).

I hope that this clarifies the situation for you (somewhat).

Yours sincerely

So, that seems to be the "official" status - for what it's worth !!

I guess I will wait 2 or 3 weeks and then get the garmin software rather than spending R900 on the currently bundled software.

Check the following...

Click MENU > TOOLS > SETTINGS > GENERAL > POSITIONING > POSITIONING METHODS

Make sure there is NO tick next to "Bluetooth GPS", and make sure that both "Intergrated GPS" & "Network based" are ticked.

Let me know if it works

Drat CodeMaster - you beat me to it (only a 3 day old N95 user here) cause I was sure I'd seen some option like that somewhere and was looking in the phone when the page refreshed

You need atleast 3 satellites under info, and they need to be solid, which happens when they lock on. Just keep it on the info page until you have 3 solid bars.
It will keep going back to your last point, until it gets a lock and sets your new position.

As far as I know, the number next to the bar is just a satellite identifier number.

That's correct. The numbers change all the time until you get a GPS lock. 3 Full (Black) bars is good enough for that, though the positioning is not 100% accurate. It will be a few meters off.

When you get 4 Full bars the GPS position is 100% accurate. Well, that's what it seems like to me.

The GPS works 100%, just be a patient with the Lock time. It goes quicker every time.

:D ;)
