A nice application you guys should try is MobileGmaps
you can get it for free from www.mgmaps.com

ITS FREE

It does work with the N95 internal GPS - im using it

few points...

select only one map view ( google satellite for a start )

remember that it eats DATA ( i used it with Virgin so not too bad....and funny thing is that maps loaded fast enough on Virgin for me to see terrain whilst moving )

It's not right about this GPS on N95.
When I've network enabled only it doesn't pick up the GPS postion.
I do a search for road it can't find it. When i ENABLE services like GPRS then it finds the road. It's very bad everytime you've to pay for downloading maps and getting the information.

Anyone know if one can download the whole entire map of south africa for the N95.. This would be great option than me spending like R50 like today just to download the map of JHB but it doesn't work finding the street...

I take out my statement :
http://europe.nokia.com/A4353385
going to try this and tell you guys if it does work.

RichardG, have you tried the SA maps from Nokia maploader? I've found they work great, very up to date, and they're free.
Anyone got any further on the licence issue for the voice navigation? I've mailed Nokia about it but got no reply yet.

Howdy Richard,
I checked this out when i got my phone - I also thought it was using up stacks of data but it isn't. The SA maps are already loaded onto the phone. The reason it needs GPRS is (i think) to return a result for the search and their co-ordinates. It is probably far quicker to send this data to some big server that'll look it up for you, than having your poor phone search through megs of road names etc. Checking the data log I see it is only aruond 8kb per search - which is rather tiny. You'd need to try look up 128 street names or addreses to use up 1 meg of data (which out of bundle will cost around R2).

Keep an eye on your data logs to confirm this

I used a Furtuna bluetooth GPS with Nav4All on N90 and works great. I am now using the N95. The maps are excellent even in rural areas such as coffee bay. You do however need to get the Nokia Maploader, and pre-load the maps for South africa from smart2go. You also don't need the voice navigation, as you can use the N95 to plan your route, and then display it on the map, and start tracking - all for free. AS for accessing the GPS from other apps, I have 2 apps (sports tracker, and wegolf) which works great with the built-in GPS. I just cant seem to use it via bluetooth from my laptop.

spikey:

Make sure you have "use network" turned on. It uses the GPRS connection to lookup address data. secondly. Try not be too specific about an address. Type "Fir" for a street like Firmount .. or CA for cape town etc. It is pretty good and then gives you a list of matches for the info you entered. Also street numbers are not needed for a lookup.

Took me a good week to figure out the "use network" bit though.

I have discovered mistakes on the n95 maps because it shows some street next to my house that has never been the and never will because theres houses there.I also went to some place in Mpumalanga and it shows one of the townships on the exact opposite side of where it should actually be,so when you go to the place the gps gets lost....is there any way of fixing this?

I got the N95 yesterday, only reason why I went for it over E65 was the GPS...

So far, my impressions of the GPS:

-Lock takes AGES inside, and is so fragile, loses it as soon as I step away from the window

-Outside (in the car) it works like a bomb though. I was very happy with the speed of the lock (<1min), the accuracy and the quality of the lock throughout my journey (from Lonehill to Centurion)

Only problem, which I am too lazy to RTFM for, is that the backlight goes off, and the screen then goes into stdby while the Maps app is on and the GPS is tracking me. Any way to regulate this, apart from the global settings?

Why would you want to use a GPS indoors:confused:

If it's working outdoors then it's perfect. You can't judge it by trying to use it indoors.
