Nokia N95 GPS

Only problem, which I am too lazy to RTFM for, is that the backlight goes off, and the screen then goes into stdby while the Maps app is on and the GPS is tracking me. Any way to regulate this, apart from the global settings?

....in the map application under settings/general there's the option to keep backlight on.

Hi Guys,
I heard from someone that it is possible to download data such as the position of speed cameras, etc. onto the GPS maps program. Is this true?! Could this be my saving grace!

Cheers, Nick

Is it possible to track someone down with the gps? because it would be great especially if your phone is stolen...

That is not really possible but there are a few things in that direction like a gps unit with a log system u can track-back/view using google earth or a gps that sends you a sms with it's co-ordinates in intervals so you can know it's location. I once of a tracker for cars that can be view through google maps also.

My map loader on my N95 does not download maps. it starts loading but when it gets to 30%,the phone goes back to menu. My gps too doesn't work. can someone please help me out with a step by step settings and which software to use? i been to www.smart2go.com but there's no N95 on their download list.

Ok, this question must sound stupid to a non N95 owner - How the hell do I enter a simple GPS coordinate into the software to find a landmark - There seems to be no option for this ?!

Under Menu Tools there is a GPS data icon. It seems to be there.

Hi,

I checked there, but it only gives my current position in coordinates etc. There is no option to enter a GPS position and look for it on the map software provided!

There is also no option to specify waypoints and then follow a route - making the GPS quite useless outside of a city environment. Guess I will have to dish out for the Garmin anyway...

Damn, just when I started liking my new N95 GPS!

Must have the features, Mine navigation is not enabled as I did not yet agree to pay MTN for the service. Check Smart2go for more information. AFAIK is does have waypoints too.

I bought the subscription and believe me there are no such options. The only work around for a specific location is taking a saved landmark - editing the coordinates and renaming it. No waypoints.

There are only the normal options to search by address, name or by category - no option to enter a specific GPS coordinate and find it on a map.

Pitty...

How does the rest work for you?

Rest works fine - GPS is accurate, software is fast, phone is great - just those missing options I mentioned is a bit of a let down. Do not understand how they were not made part of the software?

If you looking for good software with GPS coordinates I suggest handymap AI gold it's worth it and free map updates garmin is ok but customer service is ****. If you want a fast solution for any GPS purpose these guys are quick and help you every time. Garmin wanted me to pay R1200  for maps I bought last year that I lost and on top of that R749 for updates. Go to www.handymap.co.za they have a few units but more coverage than garmin but garmin does have a larger POI database (still don't know how that works out). Tell them what you need from your GPS and they will give you a solution.

On my N95, I have not seen that option to input GPS co-ordinates with Nokia Maps. I also run Route66 on my N95 and it does not have that option.

If you go Pocket PC route, you can get Handymap, iGo 2006 or TomTom. They all have some ability to input GPS co-ordinates. I found iGo the easiest to use, best looking GUI.

On my N95, if you go into the GPS app in tools, you CAN enter GPS co-ords, and then bookmark them and then use them in the MAPS program

Thanks Bboy, you are right. Great stuff.

Under "Tools", "GPS Data", "Navigation", click "Options", choose "Set Destination", "Coordinates".
