Nokia N95 GPS

Thanks Bboy, you are right. Great stuff.

Under "Tools", "GPS Data", "Navigation", click "Options", choose "Set Destination", "Coordinates".

Mmmm thought I saw it there but could not use it as yet. MAybe a MTN subscription could be worth it? ...Nah! I'l wait for route66. What do you say Piesang?

i still dont understand why you have to pay for using YOUR own gps which YOU bought with your money. kinda stupid. well i feel that way cos my N95 dont work. lol. the only place it did was in my bedroom. thats it. never again. my friend and i were busy messing around on saturday to see if we pick up signal. nothing. it shows at least 5 bars but doesnt lock. and we were outside. no luck.

Maybe you should take it back where you bought it, show them that it doesn't lock and maybe you get a replacement.

Indoors, mine doesn't lock easily sometimes. Out doors, its never been a problem.

Sorry to bump an old thread ;)

I've got a question or two regarding the N95 GPS.

Is the N95 GPS like a normal stand alone GPS, or does a normal GPS have more features?

Is it possible to take coordinates of a location, let's say the coordinates between two houses for research purposes, or does it only allow for navigation?

Reason I'm asking, my brother is getting his Nokia N95 this week and he's extremely technically challenged, but I told him to take the phone above the rest in any event, mainly based on the good things Piesang and MrG had to say about the phone.

I'll probably have to read the manual and figure out the rest to give him some help with it, so I'd appreciate if someone could answer my questions.

Thanks
tera

The N95 has the same navigation etc features as a "normal GPS". What isn't so great about it is that the actual GPS chip isn't as good as the ones found in normal GPS's, and the N95 is slow in general (as are most smartphones) so it can be a bit of a pain to use.

You can save the current location as a "bookmark" or maybe just find the other house on the built in map and then save it as a bookmark. You can definitely get it to show a route distance, I'm not sure about a "as the crow flies" distance but if it can't I'm sure you could find an app for it that can.

Thanks man,

I used an example of a house, but my brother is in the agricultural business, so he'd like to take coordinates of trees etc. I wonder if it's even possible to do it with a normal GPS, since it seems that they all work on maps and not just coordinates.

I'm thinking of it this way, if I'm standing next to a tree and I see the reading of 120 degrees this and that, I'll be able to jot it down and move on to the next.

Does it give a reading like that? Maybe a dampi level would work better? :p ;) :D

At what accuracy can the n95 gps determine your location? I know my Garmin can sometimes come as close as +-3m

if i go and stand by a tree, i can get the degree position probably within about 10m

What about using a normal (non-navigation) GPS and set way-points?

Could work, I'll try it with the N95, if it doesn't work, I'll use a normal one. Btw. I've never used a GPS before :p ;) :D

I hope you were talking to me? :p

Is there an external antenna for the Nokia N95 GPS??

Is there an external antenna for the Nokia N95 8GB? This would mean the unit can be located lower in my car and therefore be easier to see in bright conditions.
Thanks,
