Nokia N96...

Ok, so here we go again. Just a short review on the first week of playing with my N96.

The most important thing is off course the battery. Well, it lasts a whole day with fairly heavy usage now but I might just still get me the 1200mah battery so that I don't have to worry about it at all.

What the firmware are concerned, the device is flawless. No freezes, no resets, no problem whatsoever. Seems like the v12 firmware really are great.

Everything else is awesome. The storage is just amazing. You can take pictures and videos as much as you like without worrying that it may run out of memory.

A 3:30sec video clip is about 100MB. So with 1GB you can get about 35 minutes of DVD quality video recording with sound. That is about 8 hours of video recording on the N96. If you need more space like I do and you have a 8GB card installed as well you can get a further 4 hours on that.;)

For anyone that want to get a new phone, this is really the way to go. If you really need a Windows Mobile device then go for it, but if you are a die hard Symbian fan then you can't go wrong with the N96.

I haven't used my E90 once this past week. I'm not getting rid of it just yet though. It still is one of the best phones out there today.

Thing I didnt like about the n96 is that it felt like cheap breakable plastic when holding it.n95 8gb and iphone "feel" alot more of a solid phone.

Maybe there is nothing to say coz its actually working...lol

I'm glad to see that no-one has got any problems with their N96's. This is sure one hell of a good phone.

Mine is just over a month old and it is still in perfect condition. Still no restarts, software hanging or any other problem with it.

I saw a N96 two days ago at MTN Century City that was in a terrible condition. The lady showed me the phone. It had dust and sand on the inside of the screen. The phone itself looked like it was dragged behind the car on the road. It is still working perfectly though.

Looks like the N96 is build to last. I wont try it though.

It's nice to see it's not all doom and gloom where the N96 was concerned (I was starting to wonder after the GSM Arena review).
I may be getting an N96 to replace my N95-1 (which now has a busted backlight :( ), and I'd like to know from anyone that's done the firmware upgrade (Piesang?) whether it preserves the preloaded content? I know the phone is shipped with a couple of NGage trials, a full copy of NGage Tetris, the Transformers movie, and a 3 month trial of voice support on the navigation software. Do you lose any of that by updating the firmware?

I done the firmware update the same day I got my N96 and everything was still on the phone. Exactly the same as it came out of the box just with the new firmware.

I got 12month voice navigation with my N96.

12 months? That's fantastic. And it's great that (unlike the N95) we don't have to resort to dodgy phone model modification to get up to date firmware either.

Hmm, it's a pity Nokia elected to drop the GPU and go for a slower CPU. I see the Jbenchmark score has dropped significantly as a result. Compared to the N95 it's seriously underpowered.
Can anyone comment on the gaming aspect, in particular has anyone tried any of the Fishlabs games on it?

Playing games on a cellphone is not for me. That's why I have a console.

I only play Tetris on my N96 and Solitaire on my Omnia.

I do too, but I like to play on my phone when way from home, and I particularly enjoy Fishlabs' stuff-which just happens to be pretty rough on the hardware ;)

not sure if anyone can help? my n96 keeps on freezing & resetting itself. my ringtones aren't loud (i'm always missing calls!) even though its set to maximum. also, i can't seem to be able to select a ringtone & actually have it play - i have to stick with the factory setting. i tried to download the firmware update, but keep getting "lost connection during download" error message even though on 3G?

You probably just need to change your firmware.
