Nokia N97

BeVonk, thats very strange all their outlets should be standardised ... phone the melrose arch or fourways branch and use this in your defence

the MTN 350 contract is actually R20x24=R480 (instead of being R150 more expensive its only R130 more expensive) better value than someone getting it on the Anytime 200 contract over a 2yr period (not taking into account future values), thats if you use all your airtime ... (with no pay in on either contract)

for me i will be using max R200 airtime on this contract as the sim is in my car as a car phone ... i look it as R8600 odd over 24 months with is more or less the cost of the phone ...

Strangest thing, went to Vodacom4U at The Glen and spoke to the consultant, he also offered me that deal (R130x24) in addition to my current contract (Talk 120s). It works out to R460pm. According to http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=179067&page=7 , look for ocleroux post, the pay in is cheaper than the R130pm extra option I was offered. I'm rather confused, MTN apparently has the N97 for free but Vodacom doesn't? You think I can ask them to match a MTN deal considering my contract works out to R330 pm anyway?

Hmmmm....experienced the camera "flash spill" on the N97 this weekend. Is anyone else getting this. I did give the lens a little clean and things did improve somewhat.

On a side note: Daylight pics looked very good perhaps slightly "cool" and video and sound recording perhaps slightly better than my old N95.

What version of Maps are you guys using? v2 or v3?

There is currently a problem with when you download maps 3.1 it still shows 3.01 on ur maps app.... Also, once you downloaded the south african maps to your phone, after a couple of uses it starts "ignoring" the maps on ur phone and uses data to retreive the maps on online...

What ive done to help with this is to use my old nokia n95 sd card inserted in the n97, changed the settings on maps to save the maps on the sd card and then downloaded the south african maps to the phone (remembering to select to save it on the sd card) so far it has worked... no problems yet...

Has anybody found an answer for a native sip client in the phone? The sip stack is there but that is about it....

ouch, so in conclusion dont upgrade to maps 3...

Nokia has a way to go with S60v5 and N97, I've run into lotsa bugs and crashes with the latest v11 fw

On the side, for those of you considering a new MTN contract, be warned. If the new contract is considered as a "promo" by the MTN system (usually its a promo if you take a more expensive phone by increasing the monthly subscription), this "promo" contract cannot be migrated upward or downward during the contract period.

I was caught this way by MTN, and no-one bothered to tell me this when I signed up for TWO of these contracts last year. When I recently wanted to migrate UPWARDS (upwards = more guaranteed revenue for MTN) they refused me, stating that a "promo" deal cannot be migrated.

I really wish I can rid myself of this crooked service provider. Heaven only knows what came into me when I dumped VC for some silly reason...anyway

Soon as its up port dude.

Whoops, sorry  noob mistake...

The problem with all third party sip software is the inherited delay as they insist that you route through their servers. I want to speak directly with my sip server...

Hi every1.

any of you N97 owners care to explain how this (respected) hype came about this new nokia. How does the N97 compare to the old TYTN2. At first glance i thought N97, slide out Qwerty keyboard and touch screen was standard features two years ago on the Tytn2. Is it maybe that Nokia has entered the touchscreen interface market perhaps?

I have been a proud owner of the E90 and a HTC Tytn2.:)

But hey nokia interfaces are becoming better and better by the phone, just worried about the nokia handsets and their related software problems (updates and updates and updates).

oh yes, MTN and Vodacoms S60 5th release versions also differ...

Can Vodacom say when the next release if the S60 5th for your N97 will be released? There are also some stability and bugs that really need some attention, not even speaking about SIP..

It gets worse ...

The MTN system seems to prevent an upgrade for those on a financed promo deal until the full 24 month duration of the contract is up (and not three months earlier as allowed on normal deals). I've been so blocked by "the system" a few days ago. I'm going to try again later this month and if I'm blocked again - and still forced to complete the full 24 months - I'm not going to bother to stay with MTN at the end of the contract. Then it's Vodacom and the iPhone or HTC Hero for me.

Thanks....talk about kicking a man when he is down:(

Just joking! **** so that means I am really stuck with the big yello for almost 1.5 years. Eish...

If only I could cede my contract but keep the number.

Using mine with a pair of Nokia bluetooth stereo headphones. Flippin brilliant: No cable, charge lasts for 7 hours, and they support voice dialling and AVRCP. So I can listen and talk on my phone and playback via WMP on my PC. They have great dynamic range, are foldable, have noise cancelling, can handle about 1 wall + 3m or 10m without walls. Finally, i can move and listen to music without ripping the pin out of the socket or getting the cable wrapped around my chair. And I fumble much less between work / car / home.

Stick the music widget on the N97 home screen and it gets even simpler...
