Hey Guys 'n Gals,

I am in the process of checking out phone deals and am tempted (via ads and friends) to go for the Nokia E63 TOP UP 200 deal through Game.

Also thinking of a Blackberry (not sure which model, may have been the 8510 or similar) on TOP UP 200 (have to pay in like R450)....

Your advice would be helpful. :)

I would love to know why people like Nokia. I have had Nokia for many years until I changed to a BlackBerry.

Why I like BlackBerry
* Simple yet powerful user interface
* Unlimited email, attachments, browsing, downloading, IM on your phone for R59
* "Real" push email for Gmail, Outlook Web Access, POP, IMAP, etc all included in the R59
* Sync calendar and contacts both ways over the internet to your gmail account
* IM applications, Gmail, MSN, etc that do not kill your battery
* GPS Nav

sure, symbian has been around for over 10 years, but for me it has been the most stable phone OS ever (ive owned the 6600,6630,6680,n78,n79,E71,E75)
secondly, aftersales support for Nokia is the best! unlike certain '24 hour blackberry swap-out' service that takes two weeks if it should break

i support a brand that has never let me down in over 12 years

Nokia.

I've had a Curve 8900, rubbish, rubbish service and its now in for repairs for a second time...

Run a mile. Nokia ftw.I been using my dads nokia 6220 while my rubbishberry is being fixed and i thinking of not giving it back, its LIGHT YEARS better than the berry.

actually, i take back what i said. I do like Nokia.

BUT - there is also a reason BB sells so many phones and even a president cant live without one.

So maybe I'll wait till my phone comes back, i think it wont be the same one, and then comment again on Blackberry. I could just have had a dud, it happens to all manufacturers.

Nokia's are boring. I love my berry. 8510 sounds old though. Rather go for the one that's R149 a month on MTN and Vodacom. I'll never leave Blackberry (unless data prices come way down) and the fact that Blackberry offers all new features for older phones is fantastic (try getting that from Nokia, they'll release a new version of your phone 3 months later and forget about the old version's existence).
If something does go wrong it does take a while to replace but (except for Rupente whose phone must be possessed) the only problem anyone ever has is the trackball, so get the 8520 which uses a pad instead of a ball and you shouldn't have any problems).

Head-to-head Nokia(E series) and Blackberry phones are at the same level. When you include the BB service they are not even in the same league, its stone age vs space age, one day all phones will be like Blackberry.

ok i must differ there.

I'm sorry but surfing at 3G on a nokia with internet APN and surfing 3G on a BB with the BB APN via goodness knows how many BIS servers is not comparable.

Its slower. much slower.

fanboy much?

BB service in SA sucks at the moment

I had HSDPA on my E51, it was K@K slow... the reason why ? Its a cellpone it cant process the data at HSDPA speeds so its really pointless.

Nokia + exchange was also a fail, burnt up R140 in 4 days.

Only on Vodacom, it's excellent on MTN. Browsing with OS5 is fairly fast (and has anyone mentioned free, unlike Nokia) although I wouldn't choose the free service for downloads. Of course nothing stops you from paying R2/mb as you do for Nokia and using the MTN/Vodafone browser at HSDPA speeds if you want. Beyond that MTN has only has about 12 hours of BIS downtime/slowdown this year (I can understand why Vodacom users would think differently).

Funny after writing this comment you accuse others of being 'fanboys'. You haven't spent any reasonable amount of time with any other phone so Nokia must be the best? I've used most phone brands and I acknowledge there are better phones out there (Nokia just doesn't make any of them). For most Blackberry users it's BIS (free internet, always on, always connected to everything) that tips the scale in Blackberry's favour.

thats why i called him a fanboy :/

i have had a blackberry, it broke after a week and i didnt bother picking up the replacement that took two weeks and numerous phonecalls/emails.

the ONLY advantage the blackberry has is the BIS service, which seems gimmicky since you are limited to 2.9Mb downloads

no thanks, ill pay for a data bundle on my nokia

the GPS on nokia are waay better than anything on the blackberry, the blackberry i had could not get a fix on location after half an hour

in the end, it comes down to personal preference right? you want your 'free browsing' go ahead with the blackberry

want a solid reliable phone, with good features, reliable aftersales service etc, get a Nokia

I get everything you get with Nokia. My phone is solid and reliable (let's not pretend Nokia don't make duds either), my phone has great features, my GPS works instantaneously and I get Garmin for free + Blackberry Maps (you have to pay for Nokia maps don't you?), aftersales is fine (they replace rather than fix a Blackberry). The limit is only for e-mail attachments, limits on the browser are based on file type (and nothing stops you from using network browser and downloading with no limits).
Your post still indicates you're a Nokia fanboy but anyway...

As to the first post: Make sure the Blackberry offer includes BIS or else you're paying another R69 for blackberry service. It comes down to this: A blackberry is only worth it if you:
Like being connected to facebook/myspace
Use Instant messaging (gtalk, msn, yahoo, mxit, etc)
Use e-mail on your phone
Browse quite regularly
Basically if the internet is useful to you then a Blackberry is worth the price. Also if you use office software then Blackberry is also worth it (you have to pay to use Nokia office software after trial, always free on the berry). Also typing experience on Blackberry is incomparable to any other phone (if you do a lot of typing then the Blackberry is also great).
If none of this appeals to you then Blackberry is not for you.

If you go the berry route either go more expensive with a Bold for R350 or cheaper with the Curve 8520 for R149 on MTN top-up 100 or vodacom weekender.

Good point rather go to MTN if you can, but as I understand it Vodacom issues are presently sorted. Also note browsing speed and download speeds are different. My phone browses fast all the time but at midday downloading is quite slow (on the free service anyway).
