Nokia vs Blackberry

I dont see how you can compare any non-touch BB with an N97.The current crop of BB's go head to head with the E63,E71 & E72...& maybe the E75...:wtf:

The Storm and Storm 2 include all of the aforementioned specs and are touch screens and excuse me while I laugh at your maybe E75 comment.

oronte ... what i want from a phone is

1. looks ... im sorry but the BB is ugly ... and if you find it a pretty phone, i cant imagine what your GF or wife looks like ... hahahahahaha .... (assuming you a male here)... :)
2. I need a good camera ...
3. Good Nav (garmin vs what on the BB?)
4. Good memory storage
5. Email functions (yeah both phones have good email apps)
6. Decent size (the blackberry's width gets to me, ive had an E71 and hated the size)
7. Good browsing experience

the blackberry did not meet all my criteria wants, so i gave it a miss ... you talk about the processor, **** man , i aint trying to run crysis on it or any high end physics simulations .. haha ... its works ... and with decent speed to boot ... so im happy :)

so why should i worry if your phone had a 600Mhz or even 100000Mhz processor ...

truth is i aint a fanboi of any product i own, i will admit the phones flaws, but i see many people if they own a certain car, or clothing brand, or phone and its the best out there ... :) ... so yes one day i might buy a BB, if it meets my needs which none of them do at the moment ... i will give the nokia away in a few months and get something new, like i did with my samsung i8510 (which i gave to a guy who works for me a gift) ... and might think of the xperia 2 ..

see you get quite passionate about your BB :) lol ... its just a phone mate ... thats all ...

I've had my Storm 2 9520 for just over a month now and the N97 comes nowhere near.

To answer some of your q's

1. Not much to say here, beauty is after all in the eye of the beholder. Personally I like the look of my Storm but then again most touch screen phones look very similiar, they are after all just one big screen.
2. You want a decent camera buy a camera, a cell phone is only good for quick little snap shots anyway. Just my opinion but even a 8MP+ camera in a phone is useless, may be a good sensor but with such a small lense the pics will never be close to a dedicated camera. I do own a Canon DSLR so camera's in phones have always been a bit of a moot point for me.
3. If you are on MTN you get Garmap for the BB (have to download) and BB Maps (which is ***)
4. If you are comparing the N97 to the Storm 2 the N97 does have higher internal storage but both have microSD up to 16Gb, my Storm came with a 16Gb card already installed
5. Nokia has nothing on BB when it comes to email.
6. Size between the two is much of a muchness really, Storm being slightly wider but thinner.
7. The standard browser on the Storm isn't great, rather just load Opera and all the issues are sorted.

Some things where the Storm walks all over the N97

1. Capacative touch screen vs Resistive
2. 7.2 Mbps HSDPA/HSUPA vs 3.6Mbps HSDPA
3. BB has access to BIS and BES

The N97 is a good phone and I do like the fact that it has a full keyboard. The Storm has a technology called SurePress that make the touch screen more like a real keyboard, some people like it and some hate it, personally I find it great as it takes out most of the problems of hitting buttons you weren't trying to hit in the first place.

The N97 was an option when I upgraded but the pay in was more compared to the Storm.

This is the first BB I have owned and so far I am very impressed, most of my previous phones have been HTC's WinMo touchscreens and they have nothing on the Storm 2.

RIM has no real tech support in SA

i.e. if it breaks, you are fooked, and have to wait for said network to replace the phone
I've booked phones into Vodcaom - it always takes weeks regardless of the brand.

Personally I prefer it when they give me a new one like they just did so in my books thats a major advantage.

One person's bad experience is supposed to educate us of what exactly.

As it is I'd be more likely to blame vodacom for his bad luck than I would be to blame RIM.

when u figure it out, do let me know how Vodacom made the covers loose, the OS hang, and screen mount too tight. i'de really love to know! :)

Ye... sounds like the dude knows how to break phones.

I have the exact same phone and its awesome, never had a days grief.

Exactly how does one break a phone that was handed over the counter with a loose back cover, skew camera and LCD screen cover on too tight?

I have always thought I have advanced mental powers but the ability to break a phone I've never touched? Wow. I'm good.

I am however a fair person, so after 1 week I shall say the following:

My "new" 8900 is running smoother, it doesnt drop calls, SMSs are going immediately and the battery - actually works :)

As for Vodacom's customer service, despite previous complaints I was very, very pleased. They took it in 10 mins, did the paperwork quickly, just over 2 weeks (incl holidays) they phoned me, i went and picked it up - again in 10mins and didnt have to complain once.

So yes, it has got some issues but probably, this phone was put together in SA which may explain it.

And one thing I will give Blackberry +1 is the replacement thing. In my mind is better to get a new/refurbished-new phone than have someone hack around to repair it and break something else. I believe Apple works the same +1 to them too.

this is the calculator im talking about ... its about as thick as my N97 and has the same height more or less. look at the width of the phone

awful ... sies ... anyone that finds this an attractive phone needs their head checked ...

Perhaps they gave you some other customer's troubled phone and pocketed the nice new one? :D

Still loving the BB and so far it's been stable and fast. I think it's very much a per-user experience really - I've used Nokia, SE, HTC, Samsung and almost everything else and so far I like the BB the best.

I have to agree though that it is fugly and the camera is crap. Fortunately that doesn't bother me since I have a DSLR and am pretty ;)

Most NOKIAs are better specced than Blackberrys. Can anyone name a BB with TV-Out? A FM Transmitter,a good Camera with VGA@30FPS video recording? Etc. . . Forget CPU and RAM as you hardly notice in use anyway.
I take my 5800xm over any BB any day.
