Noob Ubuntu

Hey people!

i am a I.T technician working in Strand.

Recently my boss downloaded Ubuntu and asked me to load it on my workshop pc and see how well it works and if it is user friendly. Both of us have minor linux knowledge.

So far, I must say, I am VERY impressed with Ubuntu, it works really well. I am still learning, but loving it as I go. We are considering to maybe start selling our PC's with linux to bring cost down and so attracting more clients.

My problem is, I have 2 hdd connected, one running linux, and the other windows. But now I want to share a folder on the windows drive wich is located in my documents and settings/user/ my documents folder wich btw I cant get permissions on because I'm not the owner.. Now I keep getting this error: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error Permission denied.

Now, I also tried sharing linux folders, got the same error.. So what now?
 
If I understand your situation correctly you are wanting to share a folder on your windows hdd while running ubuntu? I don't use ubuntu so how are you trying to do the sharing? Is it a samba frontend?

Edit: from the error message I guess it is samba, but what is the frontend called?
 
Yes. But you see, no matter what I share, wether its linux folders or windows folders, it doesnt work. But with the windows folder I cant get ownership on.
 
did this once but don't use ubuntu anymore, and can't remember off the top of my head how to do it. sorry

Like I said I don't use ubuntu but samba usershares are shares that can be created by non-privileged users on the fly, rather than setup by root. You're error seems to be coming from the permissions on the working directory that samba is trying to use for the usershares (/var/lib/samba/usershares).

Without knowing what frontend you are using to create the shares I would guess that it will be easiest for you to escalate your privileges first and then try create the share.
 
If the harddrive with windows on is connected to the PC, you can just mount the hard drive.
 
I don't use Ubuntu so i can't really say how, I use Kubuntu. Where's my main man froot?
 
Hmmm... But in Ubuntu it's mounted already. And I did like the screencast showed, but still no.
 
if both hard drives are on the same pc why are you using samba , i may be missing something big here as my Mandriva has a setup in the control center to share my Windoze My Documents folder with my home folder. Like I said maybe I am missing something in what you are asking ?
 
Wow, o.k, in the end I had to copy the folder from the windows drive into a folder of wich i have permisions already, then I had to go system>admin>services and unlock that.

Now it works. What a mission.

The best way to do it is to allow "others" (in file permissions you have <admin,users,other> access to your drive.... yeah well not preferable.
I however have not had any problems with viewing/modifying content either from Ubuntu or from Windows (Vista). I use the IFS.EXT2 drivers in Windows and allocate a drive letter to the Ubuntu partitions. In Ubuntu I simply see and use it as another drive. Do you have the ntfs drivers installed on Ubuntu?

+1. You just mount the drive and browse the files normally. I have never had to use Samba.
