Not the most up to date maps

They are both useless as far as local updates are concerned.
 
What a waste

Instead of Garmin wasting their time on accusing Tom Tom of unfair advertising or WHATEVER, maybe they should spend that time getting their maps up to date. I travel a lot, have had a garmin for 3 yrs now, and their are still roads in my area that have not appeared, RIDICULOUS!!!

I have updated up maps every year and paid for it, it is not right. Also, my area is not the only area that is up to date, check out STREETMAPS Cape Town and get your acts together and leave the competition alone.

Sort out the crap in your own back yard FIRST!!!

Am I right in saying that the maps all come from the same supplier, Navteq, and that Garmin & TomTom just have different update schedules?
 
But who really has the best updates? Garmin does not claim they do, their complaint is that TT's advert is beyond boundaries of advertising law. So who's got the latest and best maps (consistently)?
 
As the saying goes.... only use GPS if you know where your going!:)

I suppose instead of complaining about which commercial provider is better... why not contribute to an open source alternative? We need more mappers in the OpenStreetMap project:

We've made good progress in South Africa already, but there's a long way still to go.

Summary:
1. Free data... can download source data. Minutely updates available.
2. Completely driven by volunteers
3. If you see something that is incorrect, you can go change it immediately
4. Over 115 000 registered mappers world wide

There are conversions to put the data on Garmin devices, but nothing that i've used yet.

Go take a look at the detail in the UK and Germany. We're trying to get there here in SA.

You need a lot of resources to get the kind of maps these devices use and will use in future.

The type of open-source that they do use are the amendments sent in by users. So if your road is missing or has the wrong name, then you send it to TomTom and everyone can add it to their map. Garmin doesn't have that level of customer interaction.
 
There are a lot of resources going into this project... go check it out:P Although there is already quite a dedicated group of volunteers here in SA, we're trying to build is up some more. When I see a post like this I can't help but spread the word. Already OSM are porting the maps onto Windows Mobile devices, Garmin devices etc.

But like i said... this is a source of maps and not competition for the hardware vendors. It's more like another source of mapping data:P I'm not going to climb on a soap box though. If you're interested, go check it out:P If not, whatever... I at least put it out there.
 
I recently replaced my old GPS with a Garmin...It felt like I was bamboozled out of R5000 when I realized it could not even do half the things my other GPS did. My garmin has also been the cause of me getting lost more than I would like to admit.
 
Yet Garmin's radio add claims that 8 out of 10 people in Africa navigate with a Garmin... The pot calling the kettle black?
 
I have a Tom Tom and update for free on a weekly basis

I travel around SA (mainly JHB, CT and Garden Route) and always enter adresses in the GPS before leaving

I yet have to encounter a problem with the maps
 
I'm using a TomTom. The only map errors have come across is missing street names (about 2 so far) and a one way street in town showing 2 way traffic on the map. Both of which I have corrected and submitted already:p.
 
WHichever is better Tom tom or Garmin, not important. You do get updates. Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A MIO. I bought one almost 2 years ago and there are no updates. Now MIO is introducing new units into the market, but has not made any plans to update the maps on their existing units. Biggest bunch of crooks.

Agreed!!! Thank goodness mine was stolen from my car. cost me a window, but was worth it just to get rid of the piece of junk.

Tom Tom made in Holland ;)



I have a Garmin, but I wish.......... SO WISH....... that I had a Tom Tom.
