I just noticed a discreprancy [spel?] on the ComX website.

It says: but when when you look under "Main Specifications it says:

Those are the standard specs with 256mb RAM - you choose your upgrade option further down on the page and there the 1024mb RAM is selected.

Laptop??

Supplier is out of stock and only dealers who carry their own supply will have at this point.

MSI notebooks are dodgy, go for acer,HP

sounds like a well informed statement, what with all the evidence you've offered to support it.

if anything's dodgy, it's acer's customer service. just look at the following correspondence between them and an acquaintance (basically: the top-left hinge of his notebook had broken and because acer don't have a CT office, they continue to insist on having it sent to JHB to be repaired, instead of simply sending the part and getting a local company to do it. the problem is, it would take up to a week to send the laptop up, fix it and send it back and he simply can't afford to be without his notebook for that long.):

Good afternoon -. I have perused the PDF file and my comments remain unchanged.

Of course, you are free to stick to your guns and, when I find it convenient, I shall have no alternative but to send my laptop in for the repair.

However, I can assure that - if that is how things pan out – I shall make very sure that no ACER computer will ever grace again the offices neither of ******** nor of any other ******** office in SA or around the world.

Regards,

-

Good day -,

Thank you for your Email.

I see the pdf was not attached to this Email, I attach it again for your perusal. If you read the attachment you would understand as to why the unit needs to come into Acer for repairs. I have copied **** ******** (Technical Manager) on this Email and if you want him to address what has already been addressed then that could be arranged. Thank you.

I find pre-packed replies such as "We have qualified engineers who work on the Acer products to ensure you get the quality repair that you as a user deserve" very hard to swallow.

This reply is unnecessary because even a monkey with a screwdriver could carry out the repair; it is disrespectful because what a good customer deserves is real service and not empty words; it lacks authority because, with all due respect, this is not a matter to be addressed by a Call Centre Operation Manager, but by a Technical Services Manager, Public Relations Manager or similarly qualified person.

I kindly demand a more considerate and informed reply.

Yours sincerely,

-

Good day ******,

Thank you for your Email and your support towards the Acer brand. I appreciate what you are saying and understand that your user cannot be without his unit for a period of time but unfortunately Acer cannot ship the spare part down to you for repair. We have qualified engineers who work on the Acer products to ensure you get the quality repair that you as a user deserve.

Acer have a unique Fetch, repair and return warranty in place, I attach the pdf. document for your perusal. Thank you.

I think you've been drinking too much of the stuff your nick is referring to. It's quite obvious you have nfc what you're talking about. HP?? Their after sales service is horrible. Please, if you don't know what you're talking about please keep quiet :P

MSI notebooks are _NOT_ dodgy, they work great. I've had my MSI M510C for quite some time now and it works beautifully. I've also sold tons of them and all my clients are happy. Sure you get some defective components every now and then but that you get with any PC equipment, and it's covered by the warranty anyways.

Akuma.. I'd be glad to set you up with one of those babies as i've got accounts with multiple suppliers of the said MSI machine. Please PM me if you still havn't managed. I'll probably be able to get you a better price too ;)

Oh yes.. MSI is available and repairable from both CT and JHB so suck on that Acer.

Although I've sold Acer and they are decent notebooks too, aside from the support issues :D

Once again your amazing reasoning astounds us.

The phrase "ummm Acer wins hands down" doesn't really say anything now does it??

How about some evidence to back this claim.

MSI are the largest component manufacturer worldwide supplying most of Dell's motherboards/expansion cards. Just because they are relatively new to the Notebook market doesn't mean they do not offer good value and quality.

Don't get me wrong, Acer are very good notebooks too and I'd recommend them if you require a strict work machine and opt/require an International warranty(at a premium of course), but where value for money and features are concerned you'll never beat an MSI machine.

And I know, i've researched and compared machines for the last 8 months.

Although if you need an international warranty there are plenty of other options such as Toshiba, Sony, IBM etc. so Acer would not even be my first choice.

Their entry level machines are good and also well priced but Akuma is not looking for anything entry level or international warranties now is he? :P

no. i've been using PCs in SA for the better part of two decades now, so it wouldn't even make sense.

well, besides the ferrari acer laptops, i would say that the rest of acer's product are very plain and boring...

final decision

i ended up buying the MSI notebook through darren from computeIT cc in jo'burg (kyalami).

apart from free delivery to CT, i got a great price for it and his service was impeccable.

i'm really happy with the system - it runs quake4 super-smoothly and my apps have never been happier.

MSI also provide LiveUpdate software for all the various components that ship with the notebook:

rockin'!

euroTEK Notebooks

Hi All!

It was quite interesting to read all the views on the euroTEK notebook. Firstly, I work for euroBYTE, the company who sells the euroTEK brand.

I'm glad to see that our products are being discussed! We are fairly new in the market, started up in 2000. euroBYTE assembles and repairs our own notebooks. This means that turn around on repairs etc is max. 48 hours. No sending it away to whoever wherever.

Just a thought! You can view more of our products on Digital Planet's website.

Regards,

Fred

thanks for the ad-insert fred. if i call now do i get a free watch with my next repair?...

actually, i visited your office in cape town and the staff were very lackadaisical with providing me with a demonstration/quote of the notebook i was interested in. they gave me some story about not ordinarily handling direct sales.

maybe i should have gone to digital planet where i could look forward to paying the site's service markup in addition to your profit margin?...
