Nothing cool about Cuil

I just checked it out and gave it my own mini-test, looks "Cuil", doesnt work to well. And the layout looks noce but isnt very.... user friendly. Too much all over the place.

A bit of a tweak here and there and getting some more sites indexed and they could be onto a winner.

I actually quite liked the way the things were laid out on the page.

The more negative feedback they get the better, it's all constructive criticism at the end of the day and will inevitably lead to improvements. Same as people bitching about the iPhone, even the new one has received criticism but that will help with the next version.

Seeing as there's been a huge rush to check the 'google competitor' site out I'm sure a few things bent and broke here and there which has obviously led to some problems. No doubt some sleepless nights over there but personally I'll keep going to the site every now and then & see what happens.

I like the UI, it really is a breath of fresh air, in a very dull environment, google has been the same for 8 years, yahoo and MSN are getting more and more crappy ads and "things they think i would like to have on a search page" and then the results are all the same green white and blue! Do they have search.css floating around somewhere...

The name, hello what is google, think 9 years ago, who knew what google or yahoo was, names have to be different and unique, people remember them and don't confuse them with something else. I will admit cuil pronounced cool, is a bit confusing, but it is a name and people will catch on.

As for the results I am very disappointed, like was mentioned the algorithm is not the usual candidate, on their site they mention, it ranks according to relevance rather than rank, which makes sense only if their measure of relevance is any good, the picture thing is also very confusing...

With google when you search for 2 independent search terms, for example I searched for two electronic components not necessarily related but both are components, cuil said no results found, niks Nada nothing. on google the very first result was one from a site which I found all the info I needed and teh ten thousand other results, im sure had some relevance. When i entered the two terms in quotes, google gave me a warning saying, we found nothing in quotes, but here are ten thousand results where they are not next to each other... and again the best result was first. So Cuil needs to work on their algorithm and some parts of the UI the picture thing, but i think it is a move in the right direction.

I quite liked the search engine snap - which showed thumbnail images of the web page when moused over the results. Of course I hardly ever use it and neither does anyone else.

The vast majority of people tend to use established products/services even if they are inferior.

Quite sad.

It also leads me to think cuil has no chance of taking on google.

I searched for: .net user controls

No results found....

I'm all for a google competitor, but sorry not even close cuil

Interesting.. I've noticed on a few searches that the little pictures next to them, have absolutely nothing to do with the result...

I got results from cuil for "C Kernel Programming" and got only books (order book pages from online retailers) :(

I've spoken to a few Googlers about Cuil, and they've pretty much told me "Don't worry, it'll pass" :)

Okay, I checked it out. I don't like it very much. Did a few simple searches, and couldn't find much of anything. It almost looks random. Plus that name is really horrible. I mean, really really bad. Can't help but feel sorry for whoever thought it out.
