Some small parts of the stone roof (there is an inside stone roof and an outside wooden and metal roof which was the one burning) seem to have fallen where the spire is but the rest looks quite good, much better than I expected.

That's stone for you. Only hope they don't use sh1tty modern building materials for the reconstruction

Not sure, assume it's people rejoicing at the destruction of a "religious" icon without appreciating the historical and cultural significance. Am sure Emjay can shed further light on it, am not one to swim in those waters....

To be fair, cathlochism is in decline and new ageism is in ascent. It's not really that surprising.
 
Although I am an atheist I am always surprised at people who are pleased at the destruction of a beautiful building or work of art.

While the world watched in horror at Paris’ historic Notre Dame Cathedral erupting in flames Monday, the fire is only the latest in a series of incidents that have left social media awash in images of heavily damaged churches.
France has been hit with a string of fires at Catholic churches, some of which occurred alongside desecration of sacred objects and acts of vandalism. While the fire at Notre Dame appears to be an accident connected to renovations of the church, the image of the famous spire engulfed in flames is a hard hit on the historically deeply Catholic France, as well as Catholics all over who have seen their religion reeling from devastating scandals, cover-ups and attacks.

Notre Dam is not an church though, it's a monument that is sometimes used as a church maybe I dunno. No specific congregation is getting attacked.

It's a Cathedral so not just a church.

maybe its hard to get the limestone originally used,
architects are long ago dead,
exceedingly hard to make something meet building codes and look beautiful

and maybe just maybe, they might decide the building needs to be modernized.
