Notre Dame on fire

off topic: Macron says they will rebuild the cathedral because that is "what the people want", weirdly he seems deaf to other things the people want like, oh I dunno, 22 weeks of yellow vest protests

I have a hunch it was lack of maintenance and old wiring.

Hope they can get it back to the way it was.
Your hunch about lack of maintenance would be 100% wrong... The building was undergoing restoration and was checked daily by the fire department.

I understand this is a huge loss to society but one would think" lower taxes and improved spending power to better public services " would be more important than building cathedral, isn't it? Some french billionaire has pledged 100 million euroes to rebuild this jewel already. Of course, it is his money and he is perfectly entitled to do what he does with it - and good for him.

The French would be absolute idiotic cucks if they let the goverment rebuild it. If the French people had any character they would tell Macron and co to f off and do it themselves. Essentially tithe and offering. Won't happen.

I don't think you can weigh the two equally against each other. They serve different aspects of humans.
Notre Dame comes close to being the heart and soul of Parissiennes.

Went to dig in an old documentary what the frame looks like.

It's entirely in wood and there was no electricity at all to avoid fires so you can think that the temporary electricity for the renovations is a very likely culprit.

Well I'm not sure about what electricity they use there, but mine isn't a fire risk even surrounded by wood, fabric, ect.

I am not religious by any stretch of the imagination, but I will fight for people's right to be religious, and I respect the role religion had on shaping our current society, laws and culture. This is part of that culture, and it is sad to see it go up in flames.

It's also sad to see how much glee is also being shown online. Social media really showcases the downright worst of humanity.

Couple of cool things I've found:

Historian Uses Lasers to Unlock Mysteries of Gothic Cathedrals
A tech-savvy art historian uses lasers to understand how medieval builders constructed their architectural masterpieces.

This art historian mapped the whole cathedral using lasers. Very valuable resource now, I imagine.

As Notre Dame burns, a look at its 800-year history

And a good thread here about the risks and complications with fires on such old buildings:

It's fascinating that they purposely built it imperfectly. I would love to know the reason. I know he says it was for the beauty - but perhaps they had another reason.

As with the like-it-fake sadness going around? slactivismfeels. :sneaky:
