Notre Dame on fire

Couple of cool things I've found:

Historian Uses Lasers to Unlock Mysteries of Gothic Cathedrals

A tech-savvy art historian uses lasers to understand how medieval builders constructed their architectural masterpieces.

This art historian mapped the whole cathedral using lasers. Very valuable resource now, I imagine.

As Notre Dame burns, a look at its 800-year history

And a good thread here about the risks and complications with fires on such old buildings:

Notre Dame means Our Lady, thousands of churches are named like this over the world.

The one in Ottawa is also called Notre Dame.

Edit: Thanks for the clarification. I was last there in 1990, so my memory is a bit hazy. At the time I only had a film camera, and tripods are not allowed, and my photos were not great. Glad that the nave has been saved.

The Latest: French leader vows to rebuild damaged Notre Dame
PARIS (AP) — The Latest on a fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (all times local):

11:35 p.m.

French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral and says he is seeking international help to restore the Paris landmark.

Macron said after the French capital’s fire chief announced the emergency response had changed into a monitoring and mop-up operation, “The worst has been avoided although the battle is not yet totally won.”

Macron said a national fundraising campaign to restore Notre Dame would be launched Tuesday and he called on the world’s “greatest talents” to help.

The French leader credited the “courage” and “great professionalism” of firefighters with sparing Notre Dame’s facade and two landmark towers from being destroyed.

...

11:15 p.m.

The Paris prosecutors’ office says investigators are treating the blaze that destroyed part of Notre Dame as an accident for now.

The prosecutors’ office said late Monday they have ruled out arson in Monday’s fire, including possible terror-related motives for starting the blaze.

Prosecutors say Paris police will conduct an investigation into “involuntary destruction caused by fire.”

lol @ no one wanting to pay for the renovations that have been on the cards for a long time, but now that it's badly damaged people will pay.

Might be some legal wrangling on the cards, too. From what I understand the government owns it, but its leased to the Church for free. They just need to pay for upkeep.

This is like on a par with Library of Alexandria

Oh hell no. Histories and literture of Greek, Anatolians, Egyptians, the Levant and as far as Persia were destroyed and lost forever in Alexandria.

Luckily Notre Dame Cathedral can be rebuilt but it would take probably a couple decades at least. Hopefully they use as much of the original structure as possible. I have a feeling this is going to cost several billion dollars.

The inside looks surprisingly fine.

Some small parts of the stone roof (there is an inside stone roof and an outside wooden and metal roof which was the one burning) seem to have fallen where the spire is but the rest looks quite good, much better than I expected.

Wow, I forgot there is a stone roof inside the wooden one. Much better than I had hoped!?

Edit: Water damage is going to be a huge issue. And the roof needs to be covered before the rain gets in.

Edit: Probably a lot of radiant heat damage to wood below the burning spire:

Of course. Which proves my point.
Christians are saddened because it is a part of their heritage, their culture, that is lost.
Anti-religious hating bigots are saddened bacause this is one less venue for their meaningless bucket list.

That persecution complex of yours just loves having an audience doesn't it? You know, if you constantly say people without religion live meaningless lives perhaps you deserve all the opprobrium that comes your way...

Bets are open for who is going to be blamed as a pretext for conflict (Never let a tragedy go to waste ~every ******* politician ever)
1) Atheist alt-right
2) The yellow vests.
3) Muslims.
4) Immigrants.

2) seems most likely. Macron's needs something to help his sinking ship.

I won't be surprised if 3) will be used as an excuse to bomb the Dome of the rock.

Aaaw shame, now you have to find something new to visit to fill your meaningless existence. Meanwhile, something of real meaning to religious people, yes, those people you love to mock and make bigoted comments about, is lost.

But here is a cookie, your shallow, meaningless virtue signaling is noted. Thank you so much, you can now proceed to mock religion again.
Wtf is wrong with you?
