They've just told me I need to pay an installation charge for upgrading my line from 192 to 384. This on top of the fact that they've sent my details to their lawyers for apparently not returning their bloody ISDN box even though I have faxed proof of return to them on numerous occassions.

Upgrades are free while downgrades costs R404.

My ISDN box was taken by the technician when he did the DSL upgrade ... why did you keep yours ???.

Are you telling me that Telkom upgraded your ISDN to ADSL ?

LOL FALSE ADVERTISING again, as stated in Telkom propoganda, ISDN and prepaid phoned cannot be upgraded to DSL.

IMO don't bother responding any more. What until you get the summons, submit your defence and then threaten telskum with a harrasment suit. (Just make sure you've got all the fax headers of all sent)

Do not know about prepaid phones but ISDN can definitely be upgrade/converted to DSL -- mine was

Yeah, got upgraded from ISDN too. Still getting billed for ISDN, no ADSL bill yet. Been trying to get thru to Telscum Biling dep. for two days now.

That is to your advantage since ISDN is cheaper that ADSL :D -- so why complain

Knowing Telkom, they will eventually discover their mistake and send me one huge bill. I'd rather sort it out now, than in a few months time.

Got my ISDN converted to ADSL. Took 2 months to get an ADSL bill tho. R2500 woohoo!
(Including that macaroni crap modem which I don't use :p)

no, the ISDN issue is seperate but just as annoying!

I had two phone lines, one was ISDN and the other was a std phone line.

I cancelled my ISDN account and Telkom never came to fetch the ISDN box, they just decided to bill me for it, so I returned it and got a reciept etc.

I then upgraded the std phone line to DSL192, and then a few months later to DSL384. Telkom charged me R404 to upgrade the line to 192 and have just tried to do the same for 384.

Well here is what I did

Prepaid ---> Normal (with a R0.00 deposit) ---> ISDN ----> ADSL :)

ADSL is a piggy-back service - so i am assuming your line itself is back to a normal line cause ADSL can only piggy-back on a normal line and not a ISDN line

I went from ISDN to ADSL.
I had to pay to downgrade from ISDN to Analogue, then pay to upgrade from Analogue to ADSL. Two separate job cards. It only took them 2 hours, the Tech did it all by phone when he came to install, he had a colleague at the exchange, but it cost me a bomb.
That was early days, less than 48Hours from application to install :)

Listen Mr Misinformed.

ADSL is not available in SA on an ISDN line. you can upgrade no problem and you can use prepaid(after you switch back to normal analogue)

as for the usless call center <censored/>

Due to the nature of ADSL you cannot have it on an ISDN line (South Africa or any other country).

IFAIK this is incorrect. Telkom original documents detailing their ADSL introduction reflected two options nl. ADSL over POTS and ADSL over ISDN. I have seen products advertised for adsl over ISDN. When I originally applied for my ADSL line over ISDN in December 2004 I received this reply from Telkom

Telkom Support:
Good day

It was initially envisaged to launch ADSL over ISDN, unfortunately tests run so far indicate that there are disturbances on the network caused by running ADSL over ISDN and therefore we have requested more substantial testing. The document referred to was drawn up at the time when we thought we would be able to launch ADSL over ISDN. I will have it rectified in due course.

regards

Please see mail received via Telkom website. Could you please let me know if it is possible for them to have ADSL and ISDN on the same line?

Man, if someone told a reasonably average person he was upgrading his ISDN to ADSL, what that person would understand is, he is getting rid of a ISDN line and getting a ADSL line.

Don't keep arguing about symantics and ADSL over ISDN and such, thats not what he meant by "upgrading".

I upgraded my ISDN line to ADSL, Yoy cannot have both ISDN with ADSL on the IDSN phone line. They have to remove the ISDN to use the copper

LOL Their techie told me it is technically not possible. Shows again, and that is exactly what I asked for. Then they installed new additional line, they had to remove it and replace the ISDN. So I could have had a single line replacing the lot I have now. Wonder why?? what could we have gained they would not allow ?
