It's a relatively new update. Ver 5.4 build 3437 fwiw.
I cancelled my DSTV account yesterday. They claimed I owed them R550 even the my account was in credit of R888. After the cancellation, they sent me statement showing that my account is in credit for R1200.
Being a huge F1 fan, I decided to buy a 24 Hour NowTV Sports pass and I then used it via their iOS app and via the Safari browser. Worked fine. I then logged into my Apple TV using my UK ID and the SkySports Now TV app appeared. If you have credit in your UK iTunes account, then you can buy sports passes directly from the Apple TV.
This is not the cheapest option but if this method is combined with the 9 F1 races that's available live on the BBC's iPlayer app, then it's probably one of the best alternatives to DSTV.

Live TV rarely buffers these days - catalogue shows suffer more often though and I'm really not sure why.
