I've been on Telkom Mobile a few years, and recently decided to port to MTN because my Telkom service goes down with load shedding. Through trial an error, I've found MTN to be best suited for me. On 23/09 I went to an MTN store to RICA a new sim card and was assisted with the porting process in-store. I was advised that it will be ready to use once my Telkom sim card disconnects from its network.

Although I got a SMS from MTN saying the port was successful, this never happened.

The next morning, I nonetheless put the new MTN sim card in, and immediately got an SMS with my "new" number (yes, mine - so it means the port was indeed successful). Purchased airtime, made an outbound call, everything is working fine on the MTN card.

The issue is that the Telkom sim card has NOT disconnected from the network, and all my inbound calls are being routed to the Telkom sim card, which reaches my Telkom voicemail. Only inbound calls are impacted. I cannot receive calls on my MTN sim card.

Both sides customer service is unhelpful and each refers me to the other.
Are there any Telkom/MTN subject matter experts that can advise on a way forward :notworthy:

I don't think you can conclude that the port was successful. It sounds to me like MTN have activated your number on their network, but the port is not complete.

You are now an MTN customer, so you'll need to get this resolved with them.

In my limited knowledge, there is some kind of gsm routing table used, perhaps there's a delay in it in being updated so its still routing to the old SIM? Either way, as ginggs said you're an MTN customer now so they must sort it out.

EDIT: actually if my memory serves me corretly, this happened to me many years ago. And the reason was that as mentioned the port is actually NOT complete yet. But the new network has activated that SIM and assigned you your old number on their systems. But the port is still pending...

I suspect the same. I just can't understand why they keep referring me to Telkom, while Telkom sends me back.
It's just weird that I now have the same number active on two different networks, with both working almost perfectly fine.

I think Telkom is the issue here because in 2020 I ported from then to Vodacom, it took a while for my Telkom sim to disconnect even though my number was active on Vodacom
