Number Portability here in September

eish, according to Branson:
He also commented on the lack of mobile number portability (MNP) in SA.
"I find it incredible that MNP is not in SA. And if it doesn't happen when it has been promised, somebody should question the Competition Commission. It's a very simple thing that can be done in four weeks; it doesn't need three months."

Why does it need 2 months and 20 days (now) is SA? Surely there are many more cellphone operators in markets like Europe that use MNP already?! Just the usual SA delay with telecoms?!

to me , it sounds like mr branson has just realised the pace of ICASA and the cellphone trio. welcome to ananzia. enjoy your stay.

I see the trio are going to charge you to switch networks even if your contract has expired.

The cost of R200 to change will deter many people, especially in the lower end of the market.

R200 would be kind of steep :( it would also prevent (most) users from being able to switch often... like you'd switch and then a week later your previous operator lowers their tariff

But anyways the article actually said "less than R200"

I rate pigs will fly sooner than the implementation of this...

For one I can't wait for 18 September ... I'll be the first in line to move from my provider .... whoohooo !

These delays are just making me more determined to switch away from Vodacom.

If MNP sets in, do you think we will be able to stay at our current service provider and network but switch to a pre paid deal when our contracts expire?

Because currently we can only go from pre paid to contract and not the other way around...

If you're with vodacom have you considered switching to a 4u contract package? And from there to prepaid if you still want to?

People for one thing.. the MNP CANNOT be done in 4 weeks, especially in sa!! I know a few people who work for accenture(who consult for cellc) and they were laughing at this.Unless you have 500 people working on the project in 4 weeks, it cannot be done in 4 weeks.. Overseas you have BIG companies wth BIG budgets who can hire 1000 people, contractors consultants etc. to get it done in record time....Its obviously not the same in sa..

And its generally not the operators faults,.. since they are all basically done..

The only problem is that the tendor for the CRDB (central record db) which is the interface between the different operators only got sorted out like a month ago. So it still has to be developed........ So you can regard 18 september as the earliest date :D In my opinion itll be atleast a couple of months later than that...

Have you seen the budgets MTN and Vodacom have? They're huge.

They also should have been done with this by July first so we're talking about another 2 1/2 months on top of the time they've already had.

Who's fault is it? The operators who dont want MNP put in play. Last thing they want are empowered consumers who can vote with their wallets.

Well i cant see that it is gonna be cheap... Price will chase alot of ppl away, and that will detimine whether or not mnp works or not. I would rather still keep my pre paid sim for every network

As i said before,Theyre all basically done, its just the crdb that has to be developed by an INDEPENDANT company... (please read my whole post :p )
Im just stating that what branson said about the 4 weeks is a little unrealistic. Go to google and see how long it took hungary and other european countries to implement it...
Even in the UK, it DID NOT take 4 weeks..think he was exaggerating a little to show how slow SA really is.. And BTW thats a wonderful thing the more he exaggerates the better, so people can see....... Sa needs a kick up the ass in telecoms..

If only he can say something horrible about telkom... I would be SOOOOOO happy... And in my opinion telkom deserves it ALOT more than the banks and cell phone companies.. I mean adsl is in a lot worse shape than our cellphone contracts...

Yes - I read your whole post - who selected the 'independent' company? Anyone with a vested interest in delaying the process? Why was it only selected recently? MNP has been on the cards for how long? Why not use the lessons learned from experiences overseas?

SA is all about incumbents delaying the inevitable for as long as possible. You see it everywhere.

Wonder if MNP will really make a difference. R 200 to change and only every 2 months and then still have to be approved by new operator. Question also about additional costs if you also received a phone on contract who pays for the outstanding purchase price that was subsidised by original network supplier?

Well ofcoarse this is SA..Things arent always as simple as they seem (choosing a BEE compliant company etc. etc. etc. )
ICASA chose the company. They all had to tendor at the start of the year.Dont have a clue as to why it took so long.

And ur partly right about the operators doing delay tactics. I think maybe vodacom would be using delay tactics as they have the most to lose. However i sincerely doubt cellc is, considering they :
1) just launched virgin mobile
2) They are the smallest operator and theyd have the most to gain (theoretically)
3) Theyve just hired a high profile (deputy ceo of T-mobile in europe) American CEO that aims to make a huge difference

I doubt mtn will use delay tactics as they are also planning on growing alot..
But Bwana, be glad something is happening atleast. MNP WILL be launched for sure, if not in september, then definately by the begining of next year.
Unlike telkom where we have no hope for another 2 years to come.:(
