Nvidia 8600GT in SA?

that is amazing considering rectron sells it for 995 ex vat

prophecy are nearly 100 rand cheaper than a dealer

No its not surprising, Rectron and its little brother Corex overcharge for everything (he says looking at Leadtek prices of Corex).

The retail shop PC International sells XFX graphics cards for less than Axis and whoever else are dealers, dealers mostly seem to = huge markup on graphics cards...
 
Distributors in SA are rubbish for the most part. Arguably worse than telkom
 
haha, ja the only good prices we get is when the shops actually import parts themselves, too bad its a lot of risk for them.

Those prices look good on the 8500GT, if only it was a worthwhile card, would there be a point upgrading from my 7800GT? Even to a 8600 say?

EDIT: btw, the special on the front page on prophecy is great, R2200 for a 256MB X1950XT. That kills any of the 8600 series for the price.

In what was is the 8500 not worthwhile? Is it not that much better than your 7800?

I'm thinking so. It might be a worthile card in general, but I don't see it running that many DX10 games very well..

But I see take2.co.za actually has (slightly) better prices than prophecy for the two lower end cards. They have the same 8500GT for R1022 and the XFX 8600GT for R1586, which isn't bad. That I might think of getting to replace my 7800GT.

Yeah I guess if you are going to bother to upgrade to the 8000 series and run DX10 then you should go top end...

The 8600GT will performs the same as 7800GT, the 8500GT would perform worse when I look at the specs...

By DX10 when there are some DX10 games...

:( That is not so cool then. I guess, if you were buying a gfx card now, though, like if you were buying one no matter what, you should rather go for the 8500 and wait for the top end to come down in price?
 
Depends on how it performs against the 7600GS performance wise...

But the 8500GT (and 8600) is capable of decoding (or is encoding?) Hi Def stuff on 100% its own without using the CPU for help, so it has its uses of course...

yeah, that is a pretty nifty trick :)
 
GF 8600 and 8500 will struggle with dx10 it already struggles to keep up with 7 series cards when it comes to dx9. Unless it's for a media centre pc or you like to play at low resolutions with settings turned down there's no point getting these cards. Rather save till you can get 8800 series cards or wait and see the performance of the ati mid range cards.

haha I actually looked at them again once there were better prices in SA, of course the 8500GT isn't an option, moment of insanity. The price just looked good :)

The 8600GT is also hardly worth it, but it does perform a good bit better than a 7800GT in newer more shader intensive games, Oblivion and the new Rainbow 6 etc so it might still be worth it. I'm thinking I could sell my card for around R1000 so it would only be a R500 upgrade.

I couldn't really afford a 8800GTS so its an option.. the ATI mid range of course is :D hope its good.

ntel roadmap: Cheapest Core 2 duo for $113

Intel plans to drop its prices early next week and we have already reported about it here.

The Q6600 CPU quad core will drop from $851 to $530. The Core 2 Duo E6700 will come down from its current $530 to $316, The E6600 will drop from $316 to $224, the E6420 will be introduced at $183 and the E6400 will drop from the current $224 to $183. The E6x20 CPUs have 4 MB cache, while the E6400 has only 2MB.


The E6300, currently the cheapest core 2 duo, will be reduced from $183 to $163 and Intel will at the same time introduce the E6320, again a 4MB version for the same $163 price.


The cheapest E4000 version, the E4300 will be reduced from $163 to $113.
