Actualyl both technologies where initially developed for the easy transfer of legal software and information across the globe, they where then both adopted and effectively abused by pirates. In the early days news servers where actually for news, text based documents sent between news outlets and torrents where developed by a team of linux developers for easy non-server based distrobution as back then hosting a server for downloading was extremely expensive, and comparatively still is today.

News servers are like from the 70`s and torrents decades afterwards. Torrents were designed to beat the problems (like you are experiencing) with server/client setups.

Hey if you wanna stick to your old tech, and chase sites the whole time go for it. No skin of my back. I cant handle such a slow tech but others have more patience :/

Risk can be mitigated in any scenario, news servers actually have secure connections and pirates will always find a way to get around it. Most of the dmca attacks have already been thwated simply by people giving random names to the archive files. The real names then only exist on the repository, they cannot very well issue an accurate dmca notice for 1122365.zip now can they?

News servers are a secure connection, until they are raided and logs are handed over :/

However, if you are paying for a nzb site AND a proxy then you might be ok :) So slow, so many hoops.

For the most part that's what I said, torrents for easy linux distribution cuz server costs too high, makes little dif when they started. They were both initially intended for good and abused by pirates, and even if they take 1 or both services down which is relatively impossible, something new will crop up or we will just all jump on to dc servers.

Taking down a repository site is meaningless anyway, its getting rid of the files and keeping them off, if people keep using random file names it makes it that much harder to prove any legal fault of the providers as they cannot prove whats on it.

THey tookd own demonoide, we still pirate, so taking down 1 or 2 repositories will do nothing, other will pop up to fill the gap and there are many more out there.

Once they take a big bite out of news servers they will probably start on seebdoxes or something else, there will always be a way to priate and there will always be a team of dicks trying to stop it. The 1 problem said dicks face is the fact that they are out numbered and out smarted by pirates thousands to one.

Taking down demonoid does not stop the file from downloading. You seem to muddy the waters around there. Taking down the news server does stop the file from downloading. Torrents are awesome that way. Anyways, enjoy your slow tech :)

With cloud torrenting I can pull a series and watch any episode in in about 1 minute. If I wanna watch something it has to be instant. Dont like waiting around.

IF you really thinkl about it, piracy is ultimately created by those who want to stop it. They put people in a situation where they have no choice.

Take SA for example, all the series they sending DMCA notices for area available on netflix.

Netflix will cost from $10 - $20
Reliable news server will cost you $10 - $35.

If your paying the money already, why would you object to actually giving it to the directors, actors and creators, yes I know some are eitehr too cheap or financially unable to pay and use free servers and what not.

But given the choice, would you rather pay $10 to netflix or that same $10 to a news server, which more recently gives problems.
You are still left with the same freedom of choice as for what and when to watch it, with the added bonus of avoiding any legal issues or isp shaping.

Unfortunately thank to the retarded government and our countries internet laws we are actually unable to pay for these legal services and are forced to either use and/or pay for illegal methods of acquiring the stuff we want.

Yes but your also under the impression that they have actually taken down a server, which they have not, they have only taken down repositories.
Which like demonoid does not stop the download.

Well as a South African I cant legally buy Netflix or Hulu legally. But I do own accounts and proxy to them, but thats not ideal. Take your $10 and spend it on Put.io. Use the subscription system, and always have the latest episodes of your series the minute they are out. Wanna watch Season 10 of Stargate? Pull it to put.io (should take about a minute), navigate to the episode you want and watch it right away. There is nothing faster, but its not ideal for shared networks. I have a dedicated ADSL line I use for this. So for people who cant, the legacy systems like normal torrents and nzb`s might be your best choice.
 
Other than very new stuff usenet has always been faster for me than torrents (the former always running at 100%).

Usenet uses less bandwidth (no uploads).

Most important, the ability to get hold of older stuff is MUCH better on usenet...and bonus it runs at 100% download speed.

Personally never had speed issues either way, but I have always stuck to reliable private trackers so torrent or usnet I always get full speed, usenet was just easier to automate with the combination of sickbeard, sabnzbd and couchpotato, that was ultimately the reason I went over.

Usenet has the advantage with old stuff, torrents in that regard are dependandt on seeders.

No it doesn't. News servers are not taken down, they just remove some of the files in order to comply with the DMCA notice. No big deal, if they want to lose business to these DMCA takedowns then we'll just find another provider.

Your download on the other hand is limited by whether the basement dweller you're downloading from has his machine on or not. Too often in the past I've come across something that I wanted to download that had no seeds, but a few leechers. And scene releases, where there is at least some form of QA, are always available on usenet, but may be available on torrents.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. There is very little in the way of automation when it comes to torrents. When I get home, I want to switch on my TV and watch. I don't want to fiddle and fart with moving files around first. SickBeard does have some torrent support, but it doesn't always work.

Not at all. Like most people I generally download the latest stuff which as in excess of 20k peers. If I want the old stuff then yeah, what you say is correct. However, at least I can get that old stuff. Often news server wont have that file. Another plus for torrents over nzb. If you are not getting good seeds then you are torrenting wrong. I go to the pirate bay. Choose a file and then organize that file by the number of seeds. Im happy to prove this 1 for 1. You name a nzb file. Ill get the torrent equivalent and be able to watch it before you. Then its my turn. Ill find an old file on torrents and see if you can even find it on Nzbs :D Lets do 5 of these and see who comes out on top? :)

Sad you have such funny experiences with torrenting. I never suffer from the issues you mention unless I am downloading something like Born Free or Helmut Lotti in Africa or something equally old and obscure.

I have started torrenting a little bit more than usual lately with the influx of DMCA takedowns. News servers are still my main source of linux distros though as nothing beats the automation, speed and security. I use Downstorm for any torrents as I don't want to peer directly and it's cheap. Helleva schlep though.
