Has anyone else here found that Oblivion crashes all the time and is completely unusable. I borrowed the game from a friend who had finished it and was raving about it.

I have an Intel E8500 3.16Ghz machine 2 GB RAM and a GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB Graphics Card.

Here's what I did:

1/ Installed the game - that worked fine.
2/ Trying to select a character, it works for about 60 seconds and then crashes to desktop. Helpfully it gives me the option to debug this using Visual Studio. I decline.
3/ Downloaded the latest game patch.
4/ Installed the latest video drivers.
5/ Reduced the game resolution to 1982 Pac-Man level.
6/ Turned off everything non-essential in msconfig start settings
7/ Restarted the machine.
8/ Try to choose a character. It crashes.
9/ Spend half a day searching the internet for help.
10/ Give the game back to my friend.
11/ Buy Mass Effect.

Yep, tried all that. Have turned off firewall, anti-virus, and all other non-essential programs and services. Machine is running XP SP3 and fully updated.

Only thing I can think is there is some kind of hardware issue on my machine - Although I just played "The Witcher" from beginning to end without a problem and "Mass Effect" runs perfectly

My Oblivion used to crash randomly, but never after something rediculous like 60 seconds into the character creation... not sure at all what to suggest...

Perhaps reinstall the game?

I finished the game on a FX5900 with no problems....hmmm maybe I must replay??? hmm....nah..buzy with Diablo 2 again..hehe

those must have been some low a$$ settings on that card bru ..............

yip, probably your hardware configuration. it's just doesn't like your setup man. Make sure you're running it off the disc and don't have some dodgy cracked .exe

it ran quite okay for me. pitty it's not multiplayer though.there's more than enough mods out there to keep me busy for a while, looks like.

I agree with Lord Spaceman, a dodgy crack.exe can stuff that game up!

But between my friends and I, we bought Oblivion, and then Pirated it, and made images and shared it to each other, so eventually, some one lost the game, and now the Image if the game has been pasted around so much that it either doesn't install, of it REALLY messes up your pc and windows.

Moral of the story, piracy has no quality control, so NEVER use a crack unless you dead sure it works. Rather buy the game then just use your friends, I mean, the game it cheap enough now and it just takes a long off your mind...

I bought Oblivion, and then the GOTY edition, I used a mini-dvd image to avoid popping in the disc whenever I wanted to play.

Never had a problem.

I'm playing Oblivion a lot when I have the time, and I've never had it crash on me. Even after buying the GOTY edition and installing it.

I think the key here is the Visual Studio thing, I had a similar issue with a rather crap game called Bet on Soldier. For some bizarre reason, perhaps the Windows system files needed by Oblivion are corrupt or something. Other than that, only thing I could think of is a ram issue/overclocking. I'm clutching at straws, but maybe try checking the ram with Memtest, and reducing an overclock if there is one.

I hope you can get to the bottom of this, becaus Oblivion is a game worth playing. More so than any other game I've played.

Good luck!
