Haven't been a gamer since the early 2000s, but VR has always intrigued me - I was thinking of ordering an Oculus Quest 2, because its standalone, and seems fairly cheap for what you get.

I was wondering if anyone could share first hand experience?

(I'm not bothered about the facebook requirement)

I actually sold mine after a while because I couldn't find games to play. But that doesn't mean there aren't any games - just for me HL:A was it, and everything after that felt sloppy. Some PC games also have a decent VR mode built in like Star Wars Squadrons and Subnautica but it's not much different from the normal game.

I dunno, I'll look into buying one again someday if they release something I really want to play. There is a huge community out there and PC streaming is where it's at, so if you have a decent rig and wifi network you can get a pretty seamless experience.

I only have my old personal laptop - hence was looking at something standalone, no desire to enter the PC space again, besides for work/personal coding.

I also figured I could probably sell it for what I paid off Amazon if it doesn't work out, considering what they seem to sell for locally.

I enjoy mine - mainly using beat saber to spend half an hour getting the blood pumping a bit in the mornings.
Really looking forward to hooking it up to my gaming PC once that's sorted out though, for VR FlightSim 2020!

I've got a friend who plays it standalone. Yeah like I said he seems to find enough content to be having fun with it. Personally I find the graphics too basic but there are plenty of games out there to try.

I'm with Cerebus, the last (and only) thing I really played on my Rift S was HL Alyx. Everything else just feels crap, and I'm not into the mini or music games.

SW Squadrons felt pretty good flying in your X-Wing, but the lack of focus on the single player side made me quit not too long after starting.

Think its cheaper via US amazon - looks like if I do it via my credit card in dollars - it'll be between R5400 and R5600
Probably yeah. We do get charged more here - often the price in pounds is numerically the same as the dollar price.

Out of interest, how much PC hardware do you have to throw at it for decent quality/experience? Looking at the specs required, it doesn't seem like much. (and my laptop is due for a upgrade)

I wonder if there will be a black Friday special in the US on these.

The quest projectors are 2k resolution each ...
So I reckon you need a 4k capable gfx card.

I would say minimum gtx 1070/1080 level of performance. Source: i was running my quest 2 on a gtx 1080 until recently and it ran everything fine for the most part. Only half life alyx had a bit of frame drops when things got busy on the screen. This was rendering at the max resolution too (5408 x 2736).

That being said, an rtx card would be a better choice over 10th gen card as it uses a better video encoder and there is a noticeable difference in the visual clarity on fine details.

You can get by without insane hardware. A 2060 would give you a surprisingly good experience in HL:A for instance. The main thing is to make sure the streaming from your PC is smooth. The first run-through of HL:A had some major issues with the streaming and I blamed it on the graphics card. Only later I realized that there was some way to update it to fix the wifi connection, and after that I could play the game on high without a problem.

Most PC VR games in my experience optimise quite aggressively because you really need a smooth experience. If you're experiencing framerates lower than say 60fps (it's not exactly measured the same on VR headsets) you'll feel it immediately. It's much better to lower graphical settings to make sure the gameplay is smooth.

Wife ordered me a Oculus for Christmas :D (only ordered it yesterday - but - its on the way)

Depends on what games you're going to be playing, and what's acceptable on performance to you. IMO, you shouldn't be playing PCVR at less than 90fps / 90hz.

I had a Ryzen 1600AF with a GTX 1070. Some PCVR games seemed fine, but I decided to upgrade to an RTX 3070TI. Still couldn't get Alyx running smoothly. Then upgraded my cpu to a Ryzen 5600x, now plays perfectly on high setting, no stuttering or anything.

There are some great games for PCVR. HL Alyx, Walking Dead Saints & Sinners, Lone Echo, Moss, etc. The Quest 2 is perfect for this with the wifi streaming.

Thanks, at this point I'm going to use it as is, see if it works for me, and if not - sell it on. (I have a depth perception issue with my eyes, so no idea if VR will actually work for me)

Checked tracking - arrived at Aramex Cape Town today, not sure how long till it makes it to my house, but not a bad delivery time, two weeks. (and it only left Amazon on the 17th)
